Hi all,

Picture this,say for example you charge £250 for a 4hr gig in your local area.

A customer calls you to do a gig 2-3 hrs drive, do you.

A)charge them a pence per mile and still charge the £250

B)charge them the 4hrs plus an hourly rate for the travel

C)Get them to put you up in a hotel/BB


Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated

We did one at christmas, At the client offered to put us up !, But we still charged for travel was from nottingham to braintree essex so a bit of a treck

Personally I'd add on the cost of a B&B and a bit for your travel.. say £100-120. I wouldn't really want to be driving back the same night, if you take into account that you probably won't set off till 1am, or 2 if its a late finish.

I do a fair bit of long distance travelling but 3 hours is too much.

I reckon about 2 hours maximum.

The problems are--

Traffic delays happening on the way--for that reason I leave loads of time--generally end up getting to the gig much too early--thats ok but its YOUR time.

Physical tiredness --yes it kills--Driving home very late falling asleep.

So you go to the B and B arrive about 2am maybe?

Is that popular with B and B owners?

You leave the car outside loaded with thousands of pounds worth of gear--do you have Insurance and will they pay out?

Even if you get paid out is it worth it for the aggro.

Just some thoughts--I only do this if I can stay at a friends house with secure parking.

It all comes down to whether you are prepared to spend 6 hours travelling to & from the gig, and if so then how much extra you'd want for it.

Personally, there is no way I'd want to travel 3 hours to a gig without really making it worth my while. As it happens, my basic price is also £250...so I'd quote them about £500.

Trouble is even if you havent been doing the entertaining all evening its still 3 am in the morning and your body wants to sleep:eek:

I think I would reckoned about 2 hours normally with say an extra hour?

If you are a national entertainer then you charge a national price for anywhere. If you are not then travelling and accomodation costs becomes a consideration. Most entertainers (be they singers, magicians, dj's, bands or whatever) prefer to travel home after a gig but if it is too far then you need to think about overnights and the cost.

charge what you are happy with- I dont understand people always wanting to break things down- if you are willing to do it for £500 offer £500.
If you want £1000 ask for that.

I went to bristol before christmas and just asked for a price I was happy with...

well after the marquee thread on here i said i wanted to get there early and because of the distance recent weather etc ie

didnt want to get there and find a leaky marquee in a swamp powered by 32 pound shop candles. so said id like to get there at 1-2 to set up sound check etc. so the plan was my other half would come wed set up then go for a meal as we didnt have the kids for the day.

dropped the kids off with my parents and left there at 11.30 am ...

arrived just before 4pm ..... glad i did if id have just done the arrive at 5-6 thing it would have been a total disaster .

when ever i have to travel a long way i give loads of time lee way just off my own back really as id hate to let someone down ..... was thinking i was going to have to rinng someone to post on the forum for a very quick stand in.

It is indeed it was booked about 18 months ago and didnt charge nearly enough for it had it been in the last 6 months i would have reffered the enquiry to someone a little closer i think was a huge amount of stress to pull off

Being based where I am, any mainland gigs I take automatically mean a £50 ferry ride and the associated waiting and crossing times added to the journey. In winter the boats only run every 2 hours after midnight and so if I time it wrong it can be a really long time to make even a short journey. I always travel with a roadie who's on an hourly rate so it can get quite complex and expensive.

Normal add-on charge therefore for a mainland gig is £100 to £150 - hence why I usually only come over for top-notch weddings and such - which suits me anyway! ;)

I don't mind the travelling, so long as it's worthwhile in the takings.

Interesting. I haven't yet played in the UK, obviously, but my soon-to-be web-site states that I charge 40p/mile + accommodation (if not supplied) + incidentals, also. Great minds (and the Revenue Department guidelines) mate.

now i would have charged £350 -£400 for the gig i did on saturday ... needles to say it was booked pre joining this forum and taking on board all the ideas and points raised in the last 8 or 9 months ...... however ....
