Unhelpful hotel staff

I had a bit of a strange situation last night.

Arrived at a nice hotel near Gatwick to do a Sunday wedding reception.

One of the hotel staff was showing me the room & access point when the best man also came in to introduce himself to me.

When the staff member had shown me where I set up, I asked for a table, as I always do.

He just silently stared at me...as though I'd asked the impossible.

I again said that I would just like to have the use of a table to put the CDs on behind me.

His eventual reply "Sorry...we don't supply tables for DJs." :eek: :eek: :eek:
I was so gobsmacked that I didn't even think to ask him why.

I just couldn't believe what I was hearing...I'd seen tables all over the place, both round & long, so I explained that not having a table would make things very awkward for me.

He then told me that if DJs working there needed tables, they took their own. He also asked if I'd phoned in advance to check if they could supply a table!!!

I told him no, as in 23 years I've never had a hotel that didn't let me use one of their tables.

At this point, the best man (who had been listening to our conversation) pointed to a 4 foot table with a tablecloth in the corner and suggested to the hotel guy that I could use that one.

After a pause, the guy finally nodded & then went off!

I breathed a sigh of relief, as I was really expecting him to say no again!

Is this a first, or has anyone else been refused the use of a table by hotel staff?

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. When I got to the venue the reception staff asked if I needed a table, the manager who was standing next to her gave her a dirty look and said "we don't provide tables for DJ's". Not that it mattered, I always take my own table with me.

Yeah i have to say i really cant understand why dj's don't have their own - you can pick deck stands up very cheap thesedays and they are assembled in seconds and does give you that little more of a professional look where you don't have to go and ask the venue staff... I've had it commented a few times by venue managers... The fact they can show me where to setup and then leave me to it...

I also have 2 smaller fold down wooden tables that i take with me - 1 for cd's and one for any other bits and bobs and drinks and things. Works really well and takes up pretty much no space in the van....

Well worth looking into if you don't have one at the moment.

With most shows, the lighting flightcases are enough for us to make up a workable console.

On the rare occasions that we need extra space, if there are spare tables, we have never been refused one.

Yeah i know what you mean and it does seem the hotel were just being a pain in the backside... it was prob a case of the jumped up little twerp only being on minimum wage and hating his job so trying to make everyone else miserable :D

But it's the reason i always carry the deck stand and the 2 little fold up tables... that way i know the only thing i ever need when i get to a venue is power sockets....

Saturday Night, local Cricket Club, largeish room could hold 100, 60 guests invited tables and chairs set out, no table for DJ:confused: , got deckstand and fold away table and home made lighting flight cases to put my gear on:) . No probs, but 7 tables weren't used, steward said they have to have tables repolished and can't claim off the dj for scratches etc, so don't lend them.
Quite funny as it was an end of season football do, and half the team were dancing on a small table to "come on eileen" and "geno":D , thought he was going to have a stroke when he noticed:eek: , then thought, bet he'll blame me for playing irresponsible music!!!!.
When i dj'd in the good old days (80's), at least one table was already set up for you!!!. How times have changed.

Before I got a stand ,I used to use a table from the venue! I asked for one, and the owner said, in a harsh tone " The people who booked the room did not ask for an extra table!" When he said that I was shocked, and I was thinking I'm not coming in here again!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect anyone to supply tables. I was just more concerned with their attitude to DJs. We shall see, if it is the same venue.

Seriously, why on earth should any of us expect to be provided with a table to pop our CD's on? Don't get me wrong, if there's one on offer or laying about, I'll be the first to take advantage, but it's hardly the hotel's fault that the DJ doesn't turn up correctly equipped now is it.

Reason why we ask for a table is , a lot of us started DJ'ing before deck stands etc were invented. I did use a reinforced paste table for a while and simply thought why am I forced to carry this around when most venues have tables laying around. I always put down a nice cloth over it to protect it when I use one and to my knowledge have never scratched a table in 20 years.
Saying that though if I did play enough gigs that wouldnt provide tables I would probably get a decks stand. But until it happens I cant really see the point. Why carry more especially if its a long haul gig, just wastes fuel carrying the extra weight.
I have in my contract under a section called things we require from you. ' at least 4 - 6 ft of table and a double mains power point.'

I've never been refused a table, probably because I take the time to talk to the hotel staff and get them onside, this helps for tables, drinks, buffet and recommendations, Most of my regulars put tables out ready for me, but I've got one in the van if required. Don't see the point in carrying it in and setting it up when there are plenty available.

We take our own fold up table now for cd cases along with a deck stand , but i used to just take a table if there were any lying around not being used the tend not to ask for it back once youve got things on it lol.

9/10 there is tables about at venues so never had to ask for one really , didnt have a problem last weekend there was 3 to 4 tables on the stage and a load stacked up along with chairs so not problem there.

i have now constructed a dj booth that folds flat and a table from a piece of wood on top of my ultimax stand .....that said i will still use a table if its offered and just put the booth round it.

until it happened to me it wasnt something i had even thought about thinking about .....

but after the unhelpful cowboy , unprofessional comments that you are getting now i did something about it, dont take too much to heart some people who are just a little too self rightious for their own good just take it on the chin and really mate couple of bits of wood (crazy k uses an ironing board) it eliminates the stress of the problem ...

mine just slots behind the front seats of the zafira job done.

Won't your CD cases and your console fit on your deck stand? Particularly if you only have two CD boxes. I only have a 4ft stand, but at a push I could get at least three cases on it.

I dont have room in my vehicle for a table ( no I dont want a bigger one thanks) --but I do take a DJ stand sometimes if Im doing a Wedding Disco but I still use a table.

I like Spins idea--must put that in my contract--generally though( even today) most CLIENTS---not jumped up Hotel plebs--have a table ready and waiting:D

The best advice I can give you Rob is to use the old salesmans saying-

PS Get yourself a USB reader--throw away the CD boxes ---then your life will be soooo much easier and you wont have argue with Hotel Staff!

I disagree Alan. I think as soon as you say something like that, they will think that you are acting like some kind of 'diva' and it will get everyone's back up.

Be friendly with the staff and they generally won't be able to do enough for you.

My suggestion would be the ONLY logical reasonable way of dealing with it.

Rob may not be a diva--but he is a VIP--the specialist guy that was being paid to make the Wedding Reception a big success and he was being obstructed from doing so in an unreasonable way.

He needed some respect and help by the Hotel staff and wasnt getting it---in my opinion. Normally I find they bend over backwards to help-- working as a "team" with you to make things go as smoothly as possible.

Were all professionals working together ( sometimes )

I realise I'm rather late bringing this to the, erm, table, but I've only ever had positive comments from venues about not needing to use their tables, never had a negative comment about needing one (on the occasions when I have), either. I'd rather have a positive comment than no comment, I think.

No Ricesnaps, my deck stand & amp stand are basically "x" stands...a bit like an ironing board without the top, so the only place you can put anything is on the top...and that's where the console goes, or in the case of my second stand, the amp (with the light controller on top of it)

If the best man hadn't been there, I think I would have been out of luck. I'm always very friendly & polite to hotel staff and clients alike, and this guy just seemed to be talking to me like I was pond life!

If you think I should take my own table, tell me how you decide where do you draw the line. Should I also take my own food & drink? Should I take my own chair to sit on?

What about my own generator to power my disco? After all, the hotel have to pay for the electricity I use...but it costs them nothing to lend me an unused table!

Never had a prolem, always ask the staff and they are pleased to provide one. Especially the at weddings where they can provide a table with cloth which looks smart. I also have a line in my contract that says table and two 13 amp sockets must be provided. Never been an issue, though, as I say.

After all, he was just one of many staff working that night. If he hadn't turned up for work, nobody would have noticed, but if I hadn't turned up.....

I wish he'd been the one to come & ask me to announce the buffet. Then I could have given him a taste of his own medicine by saying "I don't announce buffets. Didn't you phone me beforehand to check?"

Not that I WOULD do that of course...being the complete professional I am!

Both of you have been fortunate. Many moons ago I played a venue that refused to supply a table. The manager was a control freak to say the least. Then there was the incident recently where a receptionist asked me if I wanted a table, the manager standing next to her said they don't supply tables to DJs, luckily I carry my own now. If I turn up at a venue and they've provided a table (as most do) then great..I'll use theirs. If not then it's nice to know I have back-up in the van.

p.s: I also take my own water, glass and fold up chair. All I need when I arrive at a venue is adequate space to setup and adequate power points.

Darren, Rob....Just out of interest, what would you do if you arrived and were refused a table?

I would try & use a couple of chairs instead, or if not I'd just have to put the CDs on the floor behind me...although having to bend down every 3 minutes to find the next song would be VERY awkward for me.

I can think of 4 or 5 occasions over the years when I didn't have a table...but that's only because I was working in houses where space was very tight & there simply wasn't room for one - and NOT because I was refused one!

My terms & conditions state "It is the client’s responsibility to ensure that the function room is equipped with at least one standard unshared 13 amp 240 volt power socket and also a table for our use"

I recently added the table bit after noticing a number of other discos' terms & conditions said the same thing...although in reality I don't think I'd ever blame the client if there was a problem.

EDIT: Something else just occurred to me. If I was refused a table, I could offer the guy £20 to hire a table for the evening - and hold out the note in front of him.

If he took it, I really wouldn't mind whether he passed it on to the hotel or kept it for himself...just as long as I got my table!

sadly though its that exact attitutude that will get you a sum total of nowhere ...... it doesnt matter how much money they earn or how intelligent they are if a man has a lawnmower and you need your grass cut ...... he has the upperhand !!!!! people deserve respect whatever job they do from rob cleaners to lawyers surgeons , im the worlds worst at treating others how they treat me , i blame my schooling for that.

I've been DJing for 23 years and I had a deckstand when I started, very similar to the one I have now.
Oiii!!! Watch it Darren! The war I started dj'ing in was the Viet-Nam war. OH....maybe you have a point there!
A lot of people deride my kit because I use light boxes BUT they are part of my deck stand. I use a table to put my cd's on. I agree at many venues a table is provided or offered but I have been at places where there is none available - marquee jobs or barns are a favourite - and I have been reduced to putting my records on the floor. As a result I purchased a go-pak folding six foot table. Always be prepared for all eventualities. Its what being a GOOD mobile dj is all about.

I let them think what they like,but I always try to be friendly towards them to enable me to get them to help me like fetching trolleys etc:)

I agree with Dragonfly, that comment is uncalled for. For a start, if they are working full time, the bottom end salary they will receive is £10849.80 (assuming they are over 18, work a 39 hour week, and are not receiving any other benefits).

Secondly, you should respect people regardless of their occupation. There are people on a higher wage than you that will look down on you just the same as you are looking down on the hotel staff - yes, believe it or not, a mobile DJ isn't the most respected occupation in society.

Personally, I think the bottom line is the hotel guy did not HAVE to provide a table, but lets be honest. Would it have been a problem. He is just showing his authority. I have my own table and stands etc etc but when I might need something, I am normally over polite. I did a disco at a pizza express tonight in Kings rd, Chelsea and the staff were great. They provided me with all the food and drink I could get down my neck and when I offered my card for payement they told me not to be so silly.
