Here’s on for you... I got a booking to provide the disco for our local Private School's Reunion Ball. The school is renound as being rather posh and it certainly costs a few grand per term to send your kids there. When I asked for the details, I was told it was for the class of 2006. So it was the kids who had left last June and where getting back together, one year later for a reunion.
On the night of the gig I arrived at the Marriott Hotel in Liverpool and set up in their main ball room ready for the 8:00pm-1:30am booking. Before it got started, the girl who had 'organised' it was storming around the place, drinking vodka and complaining about almost everything. As her guests arrived it didn't take long to figure out that they where the usual pretentious, spoiled brats that you'd imagine being bundled off to a private school.
:beer1:
As the room filled up they made a bee-line for the bar, and stayed in there, occasionally venturing onto the dance floor. From time to time they would come up and "order" their requests, insisting that they where played "immediately". From my elevated position on the stage I could see a hip flask getting passed around and by the time we got to 11:00 they where all absolutely plastered. They where running round the room like lunatics and dancing on the tables. They’d thrown toilet roll all down one of the corridors and a few where starting to throw up or pass out in the corners of the room. Then it started to get really messy...
Apparently the some of the kids had taken to throwing pint glasses of the first floor balcony and watching them smash onto the pedestrianised square below. At this point the duty manger came up and said that they where going to "shut the bar early and try to get them out by 1:00am" but she insisted that if there was one more incident they'd be kicking them out straight away. Within minutes of being told this one of the kids decided to jump off a table and attempted to swing on the chandelier which hung over the dance floor, it fell of the ceiling so they tried to hide it under a table! I decided enough was enough and got my roadie to find the duty manger and let her know what had happened to her chandelier. By 12:00 the reunion was brought to an abrupt end by the hotel security staff and by 1:30 (the original finishing time) I was all packed down and tucked up in bed.
:D
And that's why I get cash up front before the start of a gig!!!
