Bank's have funny money now.

MD takes the cash into the bank and there's a dud £20 in the stash.....spoke to the guy tonight and he said he got if from the bank...:eek: :eek:

Makes you laugh if the banks can't see it.:)

Not really, I've found if you pass it off in a busy pub with low light you don't get so many problems....using it as payment for a car is pretty dumb though :)

SOUNDS FAMILIAR--Yes-a guy who repairs my boat apparently went to a Hole in the wall with a large well known Building society--withdrew cash and went to supermarket--paid with a £20 NOTE and it was identified as dud--apparently they "confiscate" the note from you.

So you cant even say--- hand it back and ill pass it off in a pub with low lighting:eek: :eek: :eek:

Apparently once identified the shop/ store have to keep it and pass it somewhere--might be the Police--

Anyway ---you lose £20:eek:

Trouble is its not exactly easy to check your cash at 12.30pm in semi darkness after the gig--in some ways cheques might be safer????????

Basically, as soon as you accept a fake note, you have 2 choices - break the law and try to use it, or lose the value of the note :(

Yeah, but how do you prove that you received that note from the bank? Put yourself in their position, should they believe you?

The bank dont know the numbers of notes they put in cash machines---I assume--so thats it--no chance

Interesting situation, and one I know a bit about...having worked in a bank for 24 years.

Most duds get spotted by banks when they are paid in (usually by pubs or sometimes shops).

However, a few of them are brilliant copies, and there is no way they would get spotted by bank staff when one is paid in amongst thousands of pounds worth of genuine money.

There are bad quality ones too...the worst I saw was a black & white one-sided photocopy of a £5 note. It was handed to me by a tramp who asked me to change it for 5 ones!

Firstly, if you get paid early in the evening before you even start, then you'll have plenty of time to check the cash in the light.

Secondly, cheques are not safer than cash, as they are MUCH easier to forge than bank notes. If someone gives you a cheque on a Saturday night, how do you know it's not a fake? There is literally no way of checking at the time.

Even if a cheque IS genuine, you still have to wait about a week for it to clear before you can draw the money out.

I'd rather have cash ANY day!

I encourage as many of my customers as possible to pay by cheque in advance. It saves a lot of worry .

Same here, Theo.

I find most of my clients enclose a cheque with the request form which they usually send back a couple of weeks before the gig...so there is plenty of time for the cheque to clear beforehand.

I AGREE BUT DOESNT ALWAYS WORK OUT

In most cases, the money is offered to me as soon as I arrive or while I'm setting up anyway. If not, I will find the best man & tell him I'm all set up & ask him for the money so I can start.

If you have only had the runaround to get paid once in 30 years then you have been very fortunate. I am with Rob on this one. I positively encourage clients to pay by cheque in advance and in any other case the contract says payment on ARRIVAL. I dont always apply it rigorously but it is there if I wish to insist on it and I do find most people do like to come and settle up and get the "business out of the way so they can enjoy the rest of the evening".
