Im just thinking about this its no secret that for some time ive wanted 2 of the imove/stairville "wash effect" moving heads to go with the spots/gobos I already have

to the point I cant find any of the wash effects that are a decent price anywhere once you have seen a pair on thomann for 400 quid 550 quid from this country isnt going to happen.

would it be possible to buy 2 of the gobo moving heads and just take out the gobo wheel without totally cram crackering the effect and use it as a wash. and would 4 moving heads constitute a show on their own or would you think other effects would still be needed?

only reason im thinking of this is because im bored lol and because people just seem to marvel at the moving heads like they are some kind of alien spacecraft that they have never seen before? plus i love them as well think they are a really classy effect.

opinions please. most of the time i use a prolight winch stand with just 1 of the 2m sections as a crossbar.

Why not have 2 washes and 2 spots up high and 2 spots on the floor.

Use the 2 spots on the floor to illuminate the mirrorball.

That's what I do - works a treat.

Not sure how you'd get the two on the floor to illuminate at the right angle, unless you are very proficient with a DMX desk?

My idea is just to have the heads on the ball at the beginning and during slow songs, rather than for the whole evening.

aaahh right im just hedging my bets a bit as im a bit concerned that with only moving heads i may not have an effect on the dancefloor at all times (if the lights are moving around the room) if i went down a par 56 route would i get the same effect from led par 56s as with lamped par 56s.? sorry to be a pain but if im going to do it want it to be right.

Are you talking about using the pars on the mirrorball?

If you are, then don't use the LED pars, 'cos I've tried that and they were rubbish for that effect!

Just looked at your diagram again Dave. You could quite easily screw a pinspot or whatever to the uprights, rather than the overhead bar.

I program a dedicated simple 2-step scene onto my DMX desk for each function where I use a mirror ball. Switch on 2 heads in the colours to match the scheme of the function or the room or whatever, swing them up to point at the m/ball, capture, sorted.

Scene 1 for the mirrorball, Scene(s) X for later.

In fact, for smaller functions I only use the desk to do the m/ball thing - when I don't want to 'capture' the heads I turn the desk off and let them run their built-in program. If I want them off, I turn on the desk and hit 'blackout'.

Seen a Stairville MV250 Moving head 4 pack with controller and cables for £895. Pretty good value to me. Or is it better to go for a different pair that are higher quality. I have worked out i can go for something around the £1000 mark and then not spend much more on lighting for a good few months.

OK, it depends on the type of truss you are using to a point. I used pinspots and a mirror ball on the smaller traditional rig. Take a small bar - I pinched one out of a defunct lighting stand. Attach at right angles to the cross bar - useful to have a hole in the bar and one on the cross bar. Bar at right angles pointing towards rear of truss. hand mirror ball on bar and it will hang down at the rear of your truss.

Then pinspots on truss wherever you choose pointing at the mirror ball.

Maplins do a 240v motor that I've bolted on to the legs that comes out from the top of the stand.

The leg stays on there and the motor has a short lead & a male IEC connector on it. The stands can either be used for T-bars or the Truss, which ever is needed.

Only 2 of my scanners are Discharge, the others are 250w ELC, the scanners I use on the floor are 150w and are just as effective as the discharge when focused on the Balls.

Balls £10 each, Motors £10 each from Maplins. Got to be worth getting 1 of each just to try it out!

My mirror ball is about 20". A bit too big as i cant find anywhere suitable on the rig to hang it and it needs about 6 par 36 lights on it to fully illuminate it. Sometimes bigger isnt always better lol

Should have the room to get the arch up with the middle section so it can hang dead center at rear of rig on Saturday. I only have standard pins to use on it - did you just buy standard PAR 56's or the LED versions. If they were standard, which beam angle lamp did you choose to go with your balls?

Boys if you are going to go down the Par route get GE Par36 standard lamps, General Electric Par36's are far far superior than the cheaper versions. By the way LED pars do not work well with mirror balls.

2 movers on the floor are the ones with gobos .... washes are next on the "when the wifes not looking" list just using them as pairs at the moment linking the 2 flown together and 2 floor together inverting the pan of one of each pair.
