Where to get music for my disco?

Hi All,

As you may have gathered if you've read any of my other posts, I am just starting out on a mobile disco venture having been a solo musician for several years.

I almost have all the hardware (having been in the business a while, I reckon I have a good understanding of equipment), BUT.....

...music! Where is best to get a good mix of songs and a large enough collection to cover most audiences. I've seen a few cd collections for sale on EBay, is this the best route to go down? Also I have a budget of around £500-£600 max.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

best person is usually Darren to ask he seems to conjour up all manner of great links for low price cds.

mastermix do some great box sets for djs and also my own advice take an afternoon and visit all the charity shops in town.

Mastermix also have offers on their 70s, 80s and 90s nights box sets too.

101CD.com (http://www.101cd.com/index.aspx?asptnr=9691) have daily offers on things. It's worth belonging to mailing lists for them as they do have some absolute bargain in compilations and greatest hits CDs.

Another one is CDWOW (http://www2.cd-wow.com/) who are very cheap for new CDs and have a few bargains kicking around too.

Probably common sense,but make sure you are getting originals if you're buying from Ebay!

If you don't mind burning a few discs or using mp3, pc, hd controller etc.

Try this: http://www./ (http://www/) (Link removed), a friend of mine just starting out got a huge amount of stuff from here, all the classic stuff and all the major artists. Very cheap.

I use 7 digital, itunes, tesco.com.

I'd agree that Mastermix is a good place to get most of your initial stuff, and would recommend their 70's 80's & 90's sets as well as some of the party discs.

Add in some 60's compilation CDs, and the Now CDs from the year 2000 to date (available for a few pounds each on ebay) and you should be in a pretty good position to start.

A good CD I saw today is 100 Reggae hits compilation just come out, shame I've got them all on about 20 different CDs, but great if you are just starting out.

It's a Russian site similar (if not identical) to AllofMP3.com there is no legal way to play any tracks obtained from this site in the UK. In fact it's probably against UK copyright laws to download from this that site even for personal use.

Well he obviously is gigging with them but I'm not sure he realises the implications of using them. Will inform him, though not sure he will care much! :rolleyes:

I have liability cover through the MU for £5,000,000 for my solo work.
I assume this is the same for mobile disco? Can anyone please clarify

You can join the MU as a DJ and I think they give you £10m PLI rather than £5m. The costs depends how much you earn and what age you are.

Alternatively, you could join NADJ who also have a very good price for £10m PLI.
