went back tonight , fellout with the best mab (grooms younger brother ) within 5 minutes .

walked in and he was with a group of mates looked at me laughed and said " i thought it was only clowns that wore bow ties" not usually fazed by cretins i thought this to be a bit of a loaded comment and replied with "yes and expensive djs who earn more in a night than most other people do in a week"

so that was it card marked,

brides mother a pain also kept coming and asking for requests all 80s stuff prince frankie goes to hollywood etc, and every track i played that she didnt like shed be over saying "no this ones no good just kill it and play something else"

"ok , what would you like?"

"anything just get this one off"

then after an hour or so trying to find something to make people move rnb 80s 90s my new best mate from earlier comes up .......... the 80s are the :Censored: decade for music and its 20 years ago lets get more modern

"ok no problem what would you like me to play"

Oh, yes, had one of those before. Unfortunately it was the aunt at a friend's wedding that I was DJing. On the third or forth occasion of her harping at me (and it was her requests that were failing, I might add), I said, "Look, I know the Bride and Groom and their friends aren't dancing but it is still their wedding, so I will play at least a few songs specifically for them over the night. If you don't like those songs that's fine, consider it a chance to go get a drink, or something."

She was notably absent from their on in.

i don't like this part of the job any more than anyone else, but i dont think its right to start making people "look like a muppet"

you just have to take it as part of the job that happens occasionally.

i don't think that you completely eradicate it by doing top end weddings either- I've done some where they have been the rudest clients, but you just have to rise above it, otherwise you become the same as them.

what happens in boots if you start to riducule staff ??? security throw you out .... thats what ..... i disagree i dont think anyone in any job should just take it as part of the job at all.

crazy i have also noted an increase in the niceness of people since charging more yes people can still be rude but i find this is when they are not getting exactly what they have payed for as they are paying more , so rightfully they need to say something in order for things to be done the way they want it , i have not come across this very regularly at all infact i cant rememberthe last time i did???? but big noting yourself to try and elevate your standings with your mates at the expense of someone else is always something that has just pushed the big red flashing button for me.

do footballers then just put up and shut up when having things shouted at them on the pitch because they get payed 120,000 a week.???

nope some of them karate kick the chap that said it / or headbutt them lololol :D :D :D :D

I hate it when that happens. Ive had that before myself.

I had a wedding sat night. That was a real good night at the hotel elizabeth near hull. Was a good night a £20 tip off the groom and some business cards handed out.

The bride and groom were more than happy with the service.

In the place i setup it was in a public bar area of the hotel. Id of thought they would have had it in the restaurant. Now during the night about half way through i moved the fader to mix the next track in. The entire disco rig goes dead.

Looking embarassed as you do thinking oh no!!! what the h*ll has happened here. I press the button on the plug (power breaker socket) the rig comes back on. for like 30 seconds then it trips back out.

I then went to the bar to get hold of the hotel manager who i told the electrics cutting off. He said im so sorry i forgot to tell you that the sockets are dodgy. So i had to get 2 long extension leads out of my bag. To run them both to the bar area (to the sockets behind the bar) using nearly a full reel of gaffa tape (near enough)

Then we had electric for the rest of the night and were able to carry on as we left off. We were delayed for 5 minutes in getting the disco back on.

I run two mains feeds (One for the lightshow) (One for the sound)

I explained the bride and groom what had happened. He said its not your fault mate. A good job too!!

It is good to have a strong contract with sensible terms and conditions but I have noticed several times that you seem to be a little eager to pull the plug and pack up when your t's & c's arent met. I think that it is better to try to enforce a contract and provide the entertainment otherwise there is a danger of getting a reputation as a prima donna and people will not book you because you are petulant (even if you are within your rights). The decision to pull a gig is a last resort in my book when I or my equipment are in danger or there is a serious problem that cannot be solved by reasonable negotiation.

I had a moment like this a few weeks back at a wedding I was doing. The bride and groom were awesome and a lovely couple and I got on really well with them. Everyone was up for a party from the word go and the kids there were really polite and well behaved and it looked like it was going to be one of the weddings of the year - In fact it was actually apart from one moment which really wound me up.

The dancefloor was busy with lots of the guests dancing to a mixture of chart and party stuff and I was getting into it and enjoying it when all of a sudden I am tapped on the shoulder by a stroppy looking older lady (probably in her mid 50's).
"When you going to play something for us oldies!?" she shouted at me.
"What would you like to hear?" I asked her.
"You're the flippin' DJ" she said...."What about some motown?"
"No problem!" I said politely and got on with what I was doing.

I looked up after cueing up the next track for the still busy dancefloor and she is still standing there with her arms crossed and looking like she was about to explode...."I'm waiting!" she shouted.."Put some motown on NOW!"
Again, I was polite as I possibly could be and told her that I would put it on in a few songs time but at the moment I was playing some of the bride and grooms requests which were working well.
I couldn't actually believe what she said next - "Listen here...I am the brides mother and I want to hear something I can dance too ok so stop this rubbish and play some motown NOW!"

It was then that I had to bite my tongue and I just nodded and said "Ok".
She continued to stand there watching my every move when she was joined by another stroppy looking lady around the same age. They chatted to eachother for a moment and then both looked at me with a look of disgust. I nearly lost my rag with them but tried to stay cool. The next track I played was The Isley Brothers - 'This Old Heart Of Mine' and I thought that would keep them happy....WRONG!
"You're useless!!" said Mrs Stroppy..."I want some motown!"
"THIS IS MOTOWN!!!" I shouted at her..."WHY DON'T YOU GO AND HAVE A DANCE TO IT?!!"
With that she actually stuck her middle finger up at me and stormed off into the darkness but not before walking across the busy dancefloor and barging people out of the way to get to what I guessed was her husband. I could see her shouting at him and pointing over to me so I guessed she was moaning about me. She was almost pushing him towards my direction as if she wanted him to have a word...he wasn't interested so she stormed off.

Just as The Isley Brothers was fading out and Diana Ross and The Supremes 'Baby Love' was starting, I was joined behind the decks by the best man..."Look mate, I know what you are going to say" I said to him and he laughed..."Sorry mate" he said..."She wanted me to have a word as her husband wouldn't"....I told him that she had moaned and expected me to play stuff for her instantly when the dancefloor was busy already and he totally understood. I also said that she had asked for motown and I was playing it but she wasn't dancing!

All of that grief lasted about 15 minutes in total and it made me feel really uncomfortable to be honest. I think it was a case of her not knowing her music and only dancing to stuff that she actually knew which I suppose is fair but it was also a case of her thinking that she could speak to me like rubbish because she was the brides mother. I was polite and I didn't let her know that she had got to me but it was hard work I tell ya. I could've easily lost my rag with her.

I never actually saw her again until around the last 30 minutes. I played a few slow tracks and she slow danced with her husband and then right at the end when the groom got up on the mic and thanked me for a good night, she joined in clapping and cheering me with everyone else!!!...Totally wierd!

At the end of the day....There are always going to be some stroppy idiots or whatever at any function whether it's a cheapie function or high end expensive one. People are people (as Depeche Mode said) and yes, it's surprising sometimes what some people can come out with or how they can act but you just bite your tongue, do the job and then as you drive away from the venue afterwards, shout out a load of obscenities out the van window!!!

I agree, the decision to pull out of a gig would always be the very last resort for me too. Thankfully I've never had to pull out of a gig. However, in the situation described, only having one power socket could be a safety issue (depending on how much equipment is required).

Dave, was power mentioned at all during the pre-planning stages of the event?.

I'm so pleased I only do 2 or 3 marquee jobs each year, and the ones I DO get are usually in the gardens of houses or right outside hotels...so they run a dedicated extention from the house or hotel to the marquee for me to use.

Shaun on the advice of some of the forum members in my T and c i do state that i need 2 double sockets within 5m of the working area however due to a 20 m extension being fully unwound from the back of the house this was not the case.

i did say that i was prepared to run extensions from the house as i have my own from their kitchen however all sockets in their kitchen were in use by the caterers so an extension (theirs which i foolishly used) was run round the side of the house to a single external power socket.
lesson learned i have to say .....im too nice to people and put up and shut up too easily...... from marquee wedding to asda gazebo botch job in 30 seconds.

the set up was thus ..... all the guests in the white tent same as pictured but bout half the size and me under the green one tagged onto the end where the large garage door shaped cut out is. could hardly get any height on the crossbar either due to the over hang. no lighting except candles or heating either lolol.
