Can of worms

Ok i know there has been loads of discussion on the net about DJ/KJ licensing without anyone really making sense of what licence/s we actually need and who issues it etc etc.

Checking around last night to see if there was any more information on this or whether the parties concerned had actually sorted themselves out and provided some clarity as to what is required i went to the MCPS website.They have changed the site around so i selected i was a DJ from the list of options.

What i found was quite depressing they are offering us 2 licences the old SG6 which we know really doesnt apply to us and one i havent seen before an SG5.Reading the description of the SG5 made my stomach turn as in my understanding if this applies to DJ's or KJ's which iit seems to the whole situation just got a hell of a lot worse.

I am not a legal eagle so reading the exact conditions of the licence didnt shed much light on it but the way i understand it (which may be wrong) is that as DJ's / KJ's would require this licence to perform.

the £1000 is just the tip of the iceberg its the 6% of your earnings for disco or 9.5% for karaoke that worries me as that £1000 is just an advance of fees.

i'm just starting out and £1000 before i've even played a paying gig is a massive hole in my budget on top of everything else

then they want me to pay them 6% of my earnings?

when i was looking at the licencing laws a few months back the figure i was led to believe was around the £300 mark, that was to allow dj's to rip from cd & store up to 20000 track on an external hard drive to play live with

or am i missing the point and i'm on about a seperate licence just to rip your cd's to your hard drive?

As far as I'm aware the SG5 is nothing to do with DJing.

It says "The SG5 Agreement covers the creation of audio or audio-visual content containing music for use within public or commercial premises (e.g. shops, bars, hotels)."

Note the 'creation of audio or audio visual' bit.

I assume this is for companies who make compilations or promos for shops, Hotels etc. Not for DJing (even though there's a link on the site)

surely it refers to creating a hard copy of your audio creation such as cd ?? just a guess.

I think it's clear that it is not aimed at DJs.

The problem is, when you click on a link on the website saying you're a DJ it takes you to that page.

Also why does is mention KJ's then....you dont really create a karaoke track in order to advertise do you? - Perhaps a tel to them to ask
