hey guys want to get a back up rig as you just never know, money is tight as spent most if it on my first rig. just wonder what you suggest... i was thinking of going second had or just get less pair of speakers about 200 watts as can get them cheap, couple of cheap scanners or something, just wondering what you suggest or what do you guys have. cheers....

Do you have any back up gear at all at the moment?

Back-up is essential. Second hand gear would do the job fine, Davey. I would say essential items such as amp, mixer and spare cd player (even a cd walkman or mp3 player) are the most important items. I don't carry any spare lighting.

at the moment all i have is a laptop with all my music on, and iv got spare speakers, but thinking of selling them and getting second hand pair of actives as by time i speant for an amp could of got actives a pair of kams iv seens for £250 @ 250 rms.

I'd prioritise it this way...

1st: Play back system
2nd: Mixer (if not included in above)
3rd: Amp
4th: Speakers

That's in approximate order of 'most likely to fail'. You must have a spare player/mixer and an amp. It's very rare for speakers to fail, and I think, more often than not speakers getting busted is due to poor behaviour on the part of punters so you could justify packing up and going home at that point, anyway. I assume you already have spare cables.

im using 2 pioneer cdjs 800s as my set up, so really should i concentrate on the mixer and speakers, as would still have 1 decks spare if one went.

If you are happy with huge gaps between songs, then yes. I'd go with at least a discman to replace which ever one went down (two going down is unlikely, after all).

I use a d2 as my main with a cortex as backup , dont have a spare mixer although I do carry spare faders and fuses for it. Carry a spare amp all the time as well as spare cables for everything (mainly iec's so easy to take a couple of spares)
Carry spare nuts bolts etc for stands as well as locking pins. At least 1 spare bulb for every type of light I carry (most bulbs in my rig use one of 4 different bulbs so carry 1 of each most of the time)
Dont carry spare speakers but use 4 full range for any gigs over 150 people so could run on 2 at a push.
Been trying to cut down on spares I take but just know the first time I dont take a spare for something will be the time i need it.

Do you carry a back up hard drive for your D2? I've just taken the plunge and gone down the Numark route too.... I intend to carry a mirrored, back up hard drive and a pair of CD players incase the worst happens and the D2 dies.......

Spare mic
Full soldering kit just in case something else goes down

I have a backup drive for it but dont bother taking it with me as I still have the cortex incase of problems. Both controllers have their own drives and either drive will work on either controller.

Carry ipod as back up, don't bother with lighting spares as no 1 priority has to be sound.

Spare lamps, fuses, spare mike etc, spare amp is a must. At the end of the day in the worst scenario you can do a show with one CD player or one speaker and no lights but you must have an amp.
I also carry a portable stereo and batteries. I have only ever had to use it once in a marquee when there was a powercut. It isnt fantastic but it provides something and also acts as a spare third cd player like Rob says.

Got to have some back-up, essential!!!

I run either 3 or 4 way(Tri or Quad-amp) with a seperate 12 channel Desk and a DJ mixer so always have options, that said I also carry a very cheap back-up, back-up system, cost £110!

........not a fantastic set-up but would get me out of a hole, use it for a monitor system sometimes with no issues.

Also have my lighting Laptop loaded with Top 1000 tunes ready to go + a basic Numark double CD player with 100cds + 4gig IPOD.
