A great start to the week with my Monday quiz

After a really good disco on Saturday, I've just had a great start to the week with my regular Monday Pub quiz night.

I've been there for nearly a year now. Last week I had my 4th busiest night, and tonight was my 3rd busiest.

It's only a small country pub in the middle of nowhere, and it was completely rammed...standing room only.

It was a fantastic atmosphere & I gave away nearly £250 in prize money in the quiz & bingo.

Let's hope the rest of my quizzes this week are like tonight's one!

Good stuff Rob, have to admit I hosted a quiz once and didn't really like it much!

I wish there was a pub quiz round my way, I like them! :D

How did you two chaps get into doing quizzes if I may ask seems an excellent way to fill up some week nights?

I started doing a pre-written quiz in one of my regular pubs in the early 90s, then went on to run a league for one of my regular clients (which I still do)

It really depends whether you just want to be a 'mouthpiece' and read the questions or actually research and understand what you are asking people. (which I prefer in case anyone argues!)

The pub type quiz is hardly worth doing money wise if you work out how long it takes to write and prepare, which is why I tend to market my services towards the corporate end. They do pay a reasonable amount and make it worth my while doing them.

Thanks for the reply Daz just thinking that I do very little really during the day and could try writing a quiz with my time , even a few quid on a Tuesday or Wednesday is better than a kick in the teeth. I too would enjoy the research bit of it and try to put to gether something that is entertaining as well as challenging.

You hit the nail on the head Dave. There are far too many quizzes and quiz masters that just read question after question...and it get's very boring, very quickly.

Dragonfly - I got into quizzes through my friend who runs an agency that supplies mobile discos & also quiz nights. He supplies about 20 quiz nights to local pubs each week, some of which I do for him.

Beerfunk - you hosted a quiz once & didn't like it much? I prefer them to discos. Hardly any gear to lug in & set up, you get the same punters each week, so you get to know them & can have a laugh with them. I spend half my time going round chatting to punters & giving them clues. Basically I'm spending a couple of hours socialising in a pub..and getting paid for it!



Its true that some pub quizzes are complete :Rob James: as they consist of one person reading out a load of questions, which is very boring.

The quizzes I run are prepared by my mate, so I basically buy them from him. He spends a whole day preparing them. There is a good variety including a picture round & a music round as well as general knowledge & various other puzzles. Most of them are on printed sheets which I hand out to the punters & give them so long to fill in their answers. It seems to work well, and it's a great way to make some extra money rather than just doing discos at the weekends & nothing on the weekday evenings! I've done very nearly 1,000 quiz nights now.

It's true that many quizzes just have one person reading out a load of questions - which is very boring, and as Darren said compiling them yourself can be very time consuming, but it's also worth looking at some of the online sites which sell quizzes fairly cheaply...including good quality picture rounds for only £2.50.

On that basis, you should be able to get a 4 round quiz for about £10, which is excellent value compared to spending at least 3 or 4 hours preparing one yourself.

That might not sound like much, but it's pretty good for basically spending a couple of hours chatting to people in a pub!

Do 4 of those a week, and that's over £1,100 a month.

How many other jobs bring in that much a month for an 8 hour week?

Many people earn that for an 8 hour DAY...5 days a week!

As I previously mentioned, they are perfect for toppping up the weekend disco money without having to get a proper daytime job!

Yes Al,

It's important to have a good variety to keep the quiz interesting.

There is always a music round (or occasionally it's mystery voices or film clips instead).

Sometimes it might just be titles or artists to guess from short clips, or titles which all have the same word in them. Sometimes it's TV themes, and sometimes it's just different questions based on different clips I play.

Last night, we had "Which if the following artists is the oldest?" "In which even year were the following songs in the top 10?" "What is this well known song being played backwards" "Which year is mentioned in this song" (I bet you look good on the dance floor was the song I played) etc etc.

I dont need to worry about the quizzes being pitched right or made personal to the establishemnt where they are being used...as all the quizzes my friend compiles are used in local pubs on a weekly basis.

I don't actually know what the online quizzes are like, as I've never used them. I've just seen them advertised.

I'm lucky though. I get the best of both worlds, as I dont have to spend time writing the quiz myself & I don't have to buy quizzes on the internet which may not be very good.

My friend writes them, so I just pay him a commission.

I run them a week behind him, so any errors will be pointed out to him by the punters before I run them, and he just phones me with the details.

I also find that he pitches them spot on...not too easy & not too hard.

Many years ago, I ran a quiz which I prepared myself, and I remember how long the preperation took. In some cases, I would sit through 30 minutes of a well-known film just to get a 30 second clip for one question.

I don't want to go back to those days. Give me the easy life ANY time!
