I know there have been many threads on the use of generators and I have read through them and I know all the things to be carefully with!

However my client has asked me what KVA I need (or is that KvA?) from the generator.

Is there a way to work this out based on my power requirements.

Also a little dubious about this one as it's a party on the beach in Southwold. Aren't there laws to prevent someone having a beach party without some agreement (and if there is, how do I verify the client has the agreement?).

I have already done the flat surface / protected from the rain / sand in the gear questions!

From a different forum
Add the wattage up on your gear


say for example it's 4000 watts

divide this by 230V

4000 / 230 = 17.39 amps "pulling from your gear"

To quote this in KVA for the Genny people.........


17.39amps x 230Volts...then divide by 1000 then times by 0.8 (power factor) 0.8 is about right for power factor

(17.39 x 230 / 1000 x 0.8) = 3.19 KVA


Then perhaps round it up to 4KVA (always round up higher)

I personally would round it up to 5KVA, just incase you forgot a smoke machine or suchlike

Matt, there must be some Local Authority control over this?

I would make sure you get paid in ADVANCE if you can--- in case the "noise police" make a raid and shut you down--the sound will carry like mad I would imagine if the wind is blowing say from the sea to the shore:eek:

Maybe a subtle phone call to the Council---err im thinking of holding a beach party etc.

I assume its not an organisation with some credibility like the Round Table etc.

Dont forget the Beach Boys music:D :D :D

I think they would need a temporay event notice from the local licensing department if its for under 500 people, if its for more than that then special permission would be required. Nothing wrong with you contacting the council to find out as you don't want to get cancelled at the last minute as the organiaser havent done their homework.

may be a public beach but if they are planning on selling alcohol it will require a licence in which case the council willl be aware of it. if the council don't know anything about it i would be very careful.

Quoted about normal, but haven't decided if I'm going to call back or take it yet. FAR too many questions first.
