Just a thought because as I'm getting on a bit now I'm going to sell my big rig/P.a and diverse into something else still related to entertainment

what I am setting up is a compleate service where I supply a marquee and all the rest of the kit (including high quality sound & lighting systems) for partys in pubs and peoples gardens

I got a quote for a marquee for my little princess's marrige (in our garden) for 100 people and it came in at £1100 for just the basic marquee, thats no flooring, no dance floor, no sound equipment ect scary eh?

I'm looking at doing the lot for a grand!

So apart from being a Dj what else do you do? or are you just dedicated to Djing?

Hi Colint,

I'm an engineer.....mechanical...DJ second, hobby at the moment but I'm getting there.:)
Have also other ideas but need to kick this one off the ground first.;)

I think that's a nice little earner you have there... ....better tap into it quick before I do.

So how will you market that....marquees are a tad exspensive???
I know I've looked...

I'm not a DJ, but I was a Mechanical Engineer, Process Engineer, Marketing Engineer (whatever that is lol) and then got into Web Design a while back...

I've got a 12m x 6m marquee including roof lining and drapes for £1300 these can be joined (side by side or lenthways) to make bigger areas and are freestanding i.e ok for solid floors

they also have strut bracing to hang lighting (on standard clamps) so the end result is very club like! and not to hard to put up either

I've been around most of the pubs in kent (not far from me) and the responce has been un-real (as you could imagine) I already have 6 bookings for next year and it's not really of the ground yet

I'm still working on putting Dj's and duo's, balloons, and caterer's in at extra cost!

and help yourself! I don't think you'd be much of a problem to me as I'm quite a way from you!

Is Kent where older DJs go?

colint
13-07-2007, 11:37 PM
one thing I would point out! the marquee is quite cheep compaired the the kit that goes with it!

flooring is about £800, the dance floor about the same plus all the electrics so the whole lot for 1 marquee come's in at about 4 grand! but I've got my money back already and it hasn't even gone out yet

and the whole lot including 4k of sound & the lighting system fits in a sprinter van

Apart from being a DJ, I'm also a pub quiz host.

I went full time 3 years ago.

Before that, I worked in a bank for 24 years, and did discos & quizzes part time.

Rob.....just a quick question - why after so long, for 24 yrs, did you leave....just being noisy...hope you don't mind..:)

Penmare,

The reason I left after 24 years was due the the conditions.

Basically, we had to do more & more for less & less...as we were always being hassled to get more & more sales.

My annual pay increases were less than the rate of inflation - so in effect they were pay cuts, there was no budget to pay any overtime and I had to work Saturdays...which was meant to be double time, but again there was no budget to pay us, so we just had time off in lieu in the week.

I could understand this if it was a small company that wasn't making much money, but this was one of the biggest companies in the country, which made a profit of £6 billion in the year I left!

It just got to the point where I was no longer prepared to accept the conditions. It was a shame that I had to leave after all that time, but not something I regret.

Looking back, I wish I'd done it sooner!

:)

Good on you....:)

Pretty much why I'm doing this......as the above.
I like my job but I am well under payed for it......don't get me wrong (Business Bingo!!!) I earn good money but not what I think I should be getting...they know that now...

I've not hidden that I now do this at every oppertunity....and questions have been asked.
Told them straight....'more money'....deaf ears..

The day will come to say goodbye, then you know it will be 'Can we offer you £xxxx......
Sorry pal you missed the boat.:)
And as there are only 2 people in the company that do my job....Paddle and Creek.....:D

Onward and upward....:)

Oh...the company I work for turn over ££££££ plus!!
So they are not short....just greedy IMHO.

There are plenty of lager swilling whipper snappers round here thanks. As for the Garden of England they concreted over that years ago. We do have britains oldest brewery but to my knowledge we dont make any cheese hereabouts. I live in a nice village but there are many much nicer counties than Kent - remember I'm from Norwich originally!
Back on thread I'm retired from the music business but as well as the disco I teach three line dance classes a week and also have a part time job three days a week for Tesco. Jan says I am a much nicer bunny to live with these days.

Agreed it's got to be fresh, real food, I do a lot of the cooking and I never use shop bought sauces or processed pizza, nuggets etc.

Much rather start from bare ingredients as long as time allows, love sunday lunch cooking, a few Belgian beers or a drop of red, laptop on the counter chatting to you lot, wife sat reading or on the web, kids happy doing whatever kids do.

Curries from a jar just wont do it for me either, you can get spices, chillies and herbs so cheap and the food always taste better!

Admin can we have a Foody forum?? :D :D :D

penmare,

It was the same with me.

The final straw came when I was told to start getting one sale a day...even though I was never brilliant at sales, and there was NOBODY in the branch getting one sales lead a day.

I thought about it overnight and spoke to the boss the next morning. I told him that we both knew I couldn't get one sales lead a day, and said that as I couldn't do what was required of me, I only had one option. I then handed him my letter of resignation.

He seemed shocked & spent half an hour trying to talk me out of resigning. He even said that I could carry on as before WITHOUT getting 1 sales lead each day, but that was the final straw & I'd already made up my mind anyway, so nothing he said could change my mind.

I gave several months notice, and a week before I left the boss had another go at talking me into staying, but his words fell on deaf ears.

I even had a phone call a couple of months AFTER I'd left telling me about a non-sales job which had come up...and it was mine if I wanted it!

It's funny that I didn't feel valued or appreciated until AFTER I'd handed in my resignation!

It's a funny old world!

They only know what you are worth when you play that magical card...then the poo does hit the fan....:)

Can't wait to hand it in...when this takes off......;)

No it's not a funny old world - it's a greedy world, with top managers living like dinosaurs....that can threat people like dirt.

BTW
My manager asked me if I would play his 50th party in two years....mates rates...and how much?
I told £1,000.00 for 5hrs.....he asked me why that price.
I replied 'In 2 years, I'm not going to get out of bed for less than that ( )and also you made enough money off my back...so your good for it!!!'

Oooooh! Norwich is a fine city. Maybe one day the Canaries will be back in the Premiere league (certainly before Barnet) and in terms of history, culture and commerce plus the third best shopping centre in the country I would rather live there than Kent but I'm afraid its a case of inertia.
