For those of you that run more than one rig and employ people to work for you....How do you know you are getting value for money?

With that I mean - the person you employ, how do you know they are doing a good job and looking after your name?

Also do you check on them....making sure they do hold up the company name?

And how do you find them?

Just interested in that side....!!

Because i work currently as a one man show. I usually sub-contract work to other dj friends in the business (someone who i trust do a good job)

Never had any bad reports yet.

Angela's a lot more flexible than me (first person to make a joke out of that goes in the sin bin for a month), I want to sack them all on a weekly basis (never anything to do with their performance I hasten to add)

Usually the way the kit is stowed at the end of the night & up until recently (when they were told to use their Velcro™ ties on pain of death) the way their (wound) cables resembled plates of spaghetti.

Things not being where they should be is another. If I can fit things in certain flight cases, then why is it so hard for them to do it?

It doesn't matter how many times you say anything, nothing will change! I agree that finding something in the wrong case/ not finding it in expected case can be top of the all time :bang: :bang: :bang: !

Firstly,

Only employ someone you can trust and have seen work, If your subbing out work make sure your on the same level and have same views / opinions on customer service etc,

What you have to remember is every DJ is different, There not going to perform just like you its individuality, As for checking up i send out feedback forms or occasionly visit them, Not to check up more to see how there doing and if they need a hand

One problem with getting other DJs to work for you is that in the event of a problem, you can NEVER be 100% certain of the facts.

For example, if you get a complaint you will ask the client for the details. You then speak to the DJ about it, who may well give a different story to the client...so you have no way of knowing all the facts, which makes it impossible to give a proper response.

I am a believer in the old saying "If you want something doing right, do it yourself"

I take the bookings, do all the paperwork and DJ at the actual gigs, so the clients always deal with the same person, and in the event of any problems I know all the facts, as there are no middle men involved.

Also, If I DID get others to work for me, I could never find anyone as reliable as me anyway, and I really don't need the hassle!

You can't let either down, don't want the possibility of them getting in a real wassock, or someone determined to try to pinch work by price cutting. Caught between a rock and a hard place. I trust my DJs implicitly.

I have seen them all work many a time and some trained with me.

I need to know that they treat the client with respect, will work well with venue staff and represent my company to the max.

They do and I know they do, as I get comments and letters from venues and clients all the time saying how fantastic they were.

We have certain ethics and values as a company and DJs know this when they work for me. If they don't have those ethics and work principals, I make sure they learn them.

i have guys that cover work for me....tend to find most of the time they come onto me refered from some of my residencies. But before i use anybody i go and have a look at the show and D.J. to see what there presentation is like and how they come across. My wife also goes out quite often to check on them and keep them on there toes...this has worked well for me. Only had a couple of duds that i had to get rid of over time but it is my reputation at the end of the day....:D

I ran five mobiles in the 70's and it was one of the hardest jobs to do and stopped being fun. VAT, tax, insurance holidays, transport, wives, girlfriends etc etc. The I got the job with Polydor and stopped all of that malarky. Anyone who does it and does it well (as several on here appear to) deserves the utmost respect. As for work I cant handle I pass it on to my agent Rob at Beejay Entertainments. Totally trustworthy. I can rely on him to put someone good into one of my customers and not steal the gig from me.

That's where I'm lucky too as I know my guys wouls never do that. I pay them well and look after them. I never lie to them about functions and always make sure they are happy to work the hours and the venue. There's loyalty on both sides.
