Installed the trial version of AVG which has just expired. Searched for the free version, downloaded and tried to install, but it won't install over the top of the trial version I had. So I uninstalled the trail version and re-set up the free version only to be told that the licence has expired.

It would seem that I haven't completely removed the trial version or there is maybe no longer a free version?

Anyone got any ideas, or is there a perfectly good and free alternative to AVG for my virus protection?

There is a free version...

http://free.grisoft.com/

Download AVG Anti-Virus (Free) direct from this link: http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg75free_476a1048.exe

or
Download AVG Anti-Spyware (Free) direct from this link:
http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avgas-setup-7.5.1.43.exe

Make sure you've re-booted in between stripping the trial off, and installing the free version Matt, just to make sure. If that doesn't work, you may need to get rid of some Registry entries.
