Why is when your doing a wedding function and the groom is a d'j and acts a complete and utter idiot thinking he knows everything and basically tries to tell you how to do your job when really he hasn't got a clue. says that all his mates that are there are top d'j's and also acting like complete idiots too. should we as the professional have to put up with this

I had one guy like this last night - didn't claim he was a DJ though. Very annoying, but at the end of the day...what can we do?

It's hardly professional to tell them to "get lost" is it? Shame!!

bad night then????? you get it , if they were all top djs there must have been one or 2 empty dancefloors somewhere last night????

don't worry it comes with the territory I'd say 80% of djs that attend functions are infinately better than the one being paid £300 to play :D :D :D

never bothers me that .....only dislike rude people (in which case I will excercise my right to reply) .......they are paying 100 qud for a headache im getting paid 3 times that to have fun and watch them make prize rodney wallaces of themselves!!!

Last night the Gladiators Inflatable Fun Game operator turned out to be a DJ. Spent half the night putting up with him wanting to come and play with the disco, as it seemed more fun than his game.:bang:

with the above what i'm getting at was last night at a top class venue the groom was a d'j (mm mm) all his mates were there who were the best d'j's in the area (mm mm) all acted like complete and utter bleeps with one of my d'js opening line to my d'j was " here this is what a want" im a d'j so a naa what am talking aboot" as he fell into the speakers at 6.55pm i want loads of cascadia (i mean how many songs did they do) bearing in mind its 7pm the disco finished at 1am. thats 4 songs on repeat for 6 hours, then the line comes out " see all these lads here they all top d'j's so if they ask for summit ye play it . reet ! if they all that good what they all doing with a night off on a saturday. these people give us good blokes a bad name and frankly pee's you right off. lets have your views on this and has it ever happened to you

Yeah had that too in the past, can really get to you!

On a more possitive note had a wedding in March this year and the Brides brother is a DJ in some Swiss resort. He was an absolute gent, came up during the night for a chat and complimented me on my kit and DJing, really sound bloke.

Speaking to the Bride after they got back from honeymoon, turns out he is one of the top Wedding DJ's in Switzerland, obviously comfortable with himself and dosen't have to big himself up to other DJ's to make himself feel better. :)

Had this a couple of weeks ago with a young guy got the dreaded line "Hi im a dj as well" lol then he started saying turn your bass down a bit its too loud then staarted looking in my cd case "put this on they will all dance" just turned round and said well im the dj tonight ill do it my way. Then got told later by a guest i know that some one said his name when looking for a dj and no one wanted him to do it must not be as good as he thinks.

if they all that good what they all doing with a night off on a saturday.

admittedly all of the norths top djs having a saturday off seems a tad unlikely but in direct answer to your question .......... attending a friends wedding !!!! which im sure we have all done :D :D

we do have to take a bit of stick doing the job we do ...... but as said ......... no one needs to be rude, if im asked nicely for things and given a little repect (as much as a person who is seeing 3 of me can give) then no complaints.

most djs critisize others and to be honest it doesnt sound as if he was being critical just saying if my friends ask for a request please play it ...... you have to remember that some people are slightly more educated and upto speed with curtousy and manners than other as well a articulate.

yes ok he felt the need to tell you he and his friends were top djs ........ is massive insecurity issues a crime now???

it wasn't the asking it was the nastiness and the speaking there is just no need . if he says he's a d'j then he should respect the job that we are doing that night he would'nt like it if we came in to his pub/club or whatever and start being nasty and aggresive with him.

the disco comes with the venue he did'nt have a choiceMay be why he's a bit miffed, possibly wanted one of the other top DJs in attendance to do it.

Earlier this year we actually had a client change venue to use us, rather than take their DJ

absolutely Steve to be honest from the sounds of it im not sure this chap didnt go with the attitude " If I cant have who/what I want at my wedding then whoever is doing it is going to get a hard time"

think on those chaps and chapesses that post things like "I'll go to the party and give the dj a hard time" it really isn't a nice feeling and sometimes its a lose lose situation you are going to get a hard time whatever ......... anyone for merlot?????

It's a no win situation. When I was resident in some places, I felt really miffed if people wanted to use their own man. When I was the non resident, I felt cheesed that I wasn't let in to work!

The fact is that most people who say to us "I'm a DJ too mate" simply aren't.

What they probably mean is "I'm a bedroom mixer" or "I'd LIKE to be a DJ"

Next time someone says they're a DJ, if you want to know whether it's true, just ask them how much PLI they have, or what they pay for their PAT...and watch out for the blank face!

Did they say they were 'mobile DJs'?

Fair comment, Vibrant...but I think if they were a club DJ, they'd say "Club DJ" rather than just "DJ"...and they'd also probably say which club or clubs they worked at.

I could be wrong, but I think that's generally the case.

I have never felt the need to inform the DJ that I too play records. The only time I have spoken to a DJ at a party is to request a tune or to complement them.
I have had a few nasty comments over the years (sorry if this offends) its normally from the older generation frustrated ex DJ's.

When I first started out with mobile work I offerd to do a friends second wedding reception for the price of beer all night, just to test the rig out and make sure it worked etc. Two grumpy old men sat arms folded opposite me all night coming up to me every 20 mins saying things like;
"I wouldnt have played that"
"Why did you follow that song with this"
"Where is Kylie"
"Why are you on the internet" (they saw the laptop and assumed I was surfing)!
"We didnt need to use computers".

I was polite on the first few occasions but eventually they got me me and the red mist came. I explained that I was a friend of the bride and was doing this as a favour and by no means thought myself as professional yet. The conversation went on at which i offerd the bloke outside,,, ooops.

Another gig I remember was in a huge hall in which I was unhappy about the sound quality and spent most of the night trying to get the levels right. At the end of the night this chap came over and said "your bass had been distorting all night, thought I would let you know". WHAT,,,,,,,, you have waited all night to tell me that, thanks pal!

One of our semi regular clients told us he was a DJ before his first booking. He was suprised that we didn't have a problem with it, as most people he spoke to just put the phone down on him when he told them!

With people like this fella around you can see why!

OK, so I'm not doing the job yet, but how does this sound?

"I'll do what I can mate, but I'm using a playlist that was chosen by the guy paying me. You know what that's like, right?"

I guess that would be my way of defusing the situation. Blame the playlist on the person who is paying for your services.

I usually say something like "I knew you would say something like that" or "If I had a £1 for every time I have heard that line I wouldn't have to work" and that usually gets a pause of silence before they ask for a tune or two. I try not to be rude but sometimes it really is hard. I mean, come on...what's the point?

It's like me going up to someone who drives a porsche and saying "I used to drive one of them!" and then waiting for them to say something...

"I used to be a DJ" or "I'm a DJ" - Well let's have a round of applause, bully for you!

Sorry but it's one of those things I hate. I posted something like this on another DJ forum a while back and all I got was grief because some people took it the wrong way...either that or they couldn't read properly. A few months back on a rare night off I had an invite to a mates 40th birthday party. When I got to the venue with my missus and a couple of friends I could not believe what I was seeing. Rope lights, 3 spot boxes on either side and a (very) small pair of speakers that were distorting big time on the floor (no stands). There was a laptop on view which was connected to a mixer that I have never ever seen before and these were laid out on top of a table which was covered by a black sheet.....on that sheet was the guys name and mobile number....written in CHALK!!!

I didn't have to say a word...my mates and missus started saying what I was thinking and I actually found myself sticking up for the guy. I made excuses like he may have just started and everyone has to start somewhere but I later found out that he cost them £60.00 and believe me, they got exactly what they paid for! Why didn't they pick me? They said that they wanted me there as a guest. As it happens I only stayed for an hour because I simply couldn't handle it anymore, the sound, the music selection, no'one dancing etc etc BUT...I would never have gone up to the guy and uttered those immortal words..."hi mate, I'm a DJ too"....as for just starting out...no way. It appears that the guy has been doing it for quite a while but has mentioned that he isn't getting the work....Erm..I wonder why!!?

As far as I know, people don't go up to a barman at a wedding reception & say "I'm a barman too, mate"

They don't go up to a waiter & say "I'm a waiter too, mate"

They don't find the hotel manager & say "I'm a hotel manager too, mate"

...so what the :Censored: is it with us DJs?

...especially bearing in mind the low opinion so many people have of us!

How do you mean "things have moved on" in my experience the standard of djs has slipped to what it was to many jumping on the band wagon .ask yourself are you a carpenter if you put a few shelfs up at home a person who claims to be a dj does it soley as a living , which brings a lot of financal pressure and keeps you on your toes . Just had 4 calls this Sat dj not turned up can you help , this never use to happen. TONYTIGER

But people DO come up and say I used to drive one of those. Very often they are anoraks and will launch into questions about torque and BHP and rpm etc. Other tradespeople also introduce each other and often empathise about the job and pass on tips to each other. Why cant dj's without getting all defensive or rude and arrogant?

That's just it though, Theo, very often they aren't passing on tips or whatever, very often they're trying to prove themselves, most often to their mates, and most often at your expense. The number of times I've had a DJ come up for a 'one professional to another' converation I can count on the fingers of one finger. Wannabes on the other hand...
