Be a guest at a function, or work as a DJ. I ask this, as "I'm a DJ" seems to have been quite enlightening. I like to think that I appreciate quality work when I see it, and must say straight away I know zero about Clubs/Club DJ's, so I will leave them out. Many years ago, a mate and I were in a pub in Hull, where a Karaoke was on. The DJ/KJ was far too good to be doing just that, had a stunning voice, was obviously familiar with punters/venue and was absolutely superb as a singer/presenter. He then went into DJ mode, and while we were there we kept saying, " yes I would have played that one next"
Compare that with functions when I have had to be there, and spent all night grumbling about the DJ/Kit/Music/Venue/Bar Prices!

Can any of you go to a function and not moan ( privately I hope, cos I know we are all Gentlemen on here) if you see entertainment which you feel is not up to scratch? I'm genuinely interested to hear what you alll feel.:confused:

Work every time, in fact I have ever only been to one wedding reception as a guest, excluding my own, a friend of a friend of a friend of my wifes.
Honeymoon lasted longer than the wedding.
Worked at brothers, sisters and wifes best friends weddings.

Yes! It can be hard sometimes but I usually dont interfere. I may very often introduce myself at some stage and try to find some positive things to say.
In general I dont like going to parties or functions where I am not doing something - running the raffle, being the barman whatever.

I can't honestly remember the last time I went to a function or pub where there was a DJ who wasn't one of mine!

That's not to say that I have millions of DJs, it's just that when I get invited somewhere, people normally ask me to sort a DJ out for them.

When I did visit pubs and clubs regularly, yes, I was very critical of other DJs. (In a good way though - making constructive comments etc)

The last time I did moan, was at my brother-in -laws wedding. It was in a Hotel where you had to have the Hotels disco. The guy was playing 80s dance stuff which no-one was reacting to. He had a very good mic manner, so obviously had worked elsewhere. When I asked him to play more 'cheesey' wedding type music, he said "I don't normally do weddings and am not sure what to play"

So the Hotel supplied a DJ who you had to have and he didn't normally do weddings. I think they paid about £250 and this was a few years ago. There was no contract from the DJ or Hotel and my brother-in-law went to ask for a slowie to start with and came back looking worried saying the DJ had "no slow music"!!!!!

Eventually he started with some slowie soul song that I'd never heard of. I was disgusted and told my brother-in-law to make a serious complaint, but his parents in law had paid for it and he couldn't be bothered.

If he was of a certain standard then yes.

If he was rubbish, then probably not.

This year I havent gone out to functions/rallies as much as I would like and altho you never switch off 100% I always take note of teh dj and what hes doing - as well as friends/other peoples comments and try and take note from his mistakes.

For me this helps when I feel Im getting Stale

Firstly no. Sadly I have no knowledge of others bearing this nom de plume. Accept no imitations!;)
This is my point. My wife had previously thought that I was mentally unbalanced, and Victor Meldrew's less cheerful twin! She is amazed to find that , at least in here, I pass for normal!

If at a wedding/social function I can't turn off from the DJ thing. If the DJ's not that great I request a few tunes and try to coerce people onto the floor with me, try to help the guy.
I am a tolerent person and would never announce to him that I am a DJ or slag him off.



If going out properly though, clubbing etc. I foget all about being a DJ, no problem. I usualy get messy and dance my head off, I love to dance and it has to be the right music.
If the dj's not up to much I go elsewhere, wouldn't stick around. I have to totally loose myself in the music. Don't get out much, too busy with the mobile thing! :D

Yes on the other side of the coin at my sisters wedding I was the only one who thought the disco was ok ........... people danced the music was what was asked for ...... job done .

no he didn't put the effort into his show that i do but thats besides the point he isn't me.

I can appreciate people do things differently and it will not always be to my taste and as long as the customer and majority of guests are happy then as said its a result.

Last time I saw a DJ in action who wasn't one of ours was in the bar I used to work in day times. Now I knew for a fact that the sound system was good (I actually use the mixer now) because I used to play my own CDs through it a) Whilst doing the cleaning in the morning (ear bleedingly loud) &
b) During opening hours (not as loud)

This numpty apart from playing a set that was that obvious I could have done it standing on my head, had the top end so high it was distorting so much it was painful.

Here's the real choker, this guy was supposedly quite a name DJ who had done regular sets at Starsky & Hutch (one of the many rip off 70s disco nights that sprung up in the wake of Carwash)

I told the manager to tell him to take the top end off a bit (I didn't want to do the I'm a DJ bit), when he did the whole bar visibly breathed a sigh of relief!

For me, it depends.. I'm more likely to want to get behind the decks if the music isn't good. Generally though, I don't like to DJ at functions every week, and it's good to relax and enjoy the occassion sometimes :beer1:

Usually i prefer to work a function. But if its a family party or friends party i usually do it for them.
