Lighting up a performer

Just signed the contract and taken the deposit for three consecutive christmas party nights for a local comedy club. Now I need to provide lighting for the commicts, which will need to be in addition to my usual rig.

I'm thinking four standard PARS, but wondered if anyone knew the light throw vs distance for PARS? I think the cans will need to be about 5m away from the stage at there furthest. I'm thinking 500w PAR 64's with a medium beam, but is that going to be ok at that distance or maybe overkill?

When I do a karaoke gig, I light the performer with four LED Par56s set to white (two on a T-bar each side). I use a 2 way 'Y' IEC lead which are each controlled by a RF 13amp switch unit (sold in packs of 3 at B&Q at xmas).

Cheaper option than the imoves.

about 15 foot by 10 foot.

Venue is size of a basketball court. Ligthibng to go at edge of room, stage in middle by one wall.

I won't be spending £250 or so on icolours. I will deffinately be doing this with standard cans. There is absolutely not the money for anything else.

So will PAR 64's with 500 watt lamps do the trick?

I've provided lighting for performers on several occasions and find that 2 par 56's do very well. i usually use a red and a yellow filter on them and it provides nice ambience.

If I were you, I would have one T-bar directly opposite the stage (so at the back or whatever) with 4 64 long nose cans. I wouldn't suggest the 1kw versions as power issues may arise.

I would experiement with colour, although I'd be inclinded to say start off by ordering some LEE103 Gel (Straw) (this will create a warm feeling, rather than the harsh white). You might decide you would like to add some red (LEE106) which will create an even warmer effect. Or depending upon the venue some Mid Blue (LEE118) might be suitable to break it up.

You can buy gel on a roll (0.55m x 1m??) for about £3-4 typically.

If your feeling really clever, you could then have some description of some truss behind the stage with your LED pars on....facing down just to look nice (not actually do anything).

Agreed. I use straw gel often for simple stage washes.

Just to breath life into this thread again and because the PAR 64's I was looking at I missed out on, would I be just as well getting PAR 56's instead? Just concerned how well they will "throw" the light as I will have to set them up at the rear of the hall.

Long pars are only good for spotlighting. If your iluminating a band you need medium or wide throw. Depending on your distance from them obviously. But when I provide band lighting I provide wide throw par 56's to illuminate the whole band and it gives a warmer glow as well.

Where you say throw, I presume you mean "angle"? maybe "wash"?

Obviously your statement depends upon distance of lantern to surface(stage) as a long-nose can would be far more prefable if your going anything much further than 6m.

Although you are correct, if your distance is 2-4m or closer.

Oh! Also Matt...

Make sure you get decent lamps for them. I suggest GE for PARs. I've found the cheaper lamps tend show the inner layers, so don't create a defined beam, more of a beam with bits of light around the edges, creating a "hairy" effect :(
