I was given a similar play list at my last Wedding and it went down a storm---the B and G obviously knew precisely what they and their friends liked--

Last Saturday I was at a Yacht Club that I just secured the residency at (well if you can call 5/6 gigs a year a residency....)!

I was warned that this lot were notoriously hard to please, no-one ever danced, they'd sacked the last 3 or 4 DJ's because they couldn't get the crowd going etc.. Probably in part due to the disco being in the evening after an all-day regatta or such and everyone was exhausted!

Anyway, the first night was back in April and was the trial night. So we did a 70's night (my idea) and it went down a storm. Hesitant at first, but full floor calling for more at the end.

Saturday was meant to be a beach party in the afternoon followed by BBQ+Disco in the evening but the beach bit got cancelled due to the weather. I decided to try a 'request night' and promptly filled the place with flyers with the reverses printed up for requests.

Well what a weird evening! I really was the big flashing jukebox - everything from Elvis to Soft Cell ('anything but tainted love mate') and some stuff I'd never imagine playing in a mixed audience. But again, a great night.

So I've kept all the request slips and I now know EXACTLY what to play next time :D

Cutting a long story short, what I guess I'm saying is don't worry that you've got a rigid playlist. Just go with it and be prepared to tweak it here and there if things aren't going too well. If the B+G have done their homework, it'll be a great night.

I've got a similar dilemma this coming Saturday - playlist of over 70 songs so far - have a look HERE (http://www.vectisvibe.com/pages/E2143.htm) and see what I'm up against! Thankfully plenty of leaway with order of placement and track selection. Luckily lots of input from other guests, not just the B+G.

I'd advise to warn them though.

You never know it might go like most of the ones I've done with fairly rigid playlists, they've all been a blast!

Just a suggestion. What I tend to do if I get a rigid or lenghty playlist is to print out say 15 copies of the list headed Bride & Groom's Wedding Playlist with the venue, date etc. to give it a personal touch.

This lets everyone know what to expect and gives you a get out if it doesn't go well. I find that doing this gets everyone in the right frame of mind and invites requests along the same theme.

It will be programed into my LED sign, that way they know the music has been chosen by the Bride and Groom.I,m not worried about it, but playing tunes in order really does make you feel an onlooker rather than a performer.

This has been coming for some time now--the World and his wife are buying an ipod and realising the power they have for their personal music collections and consider themselves as virtual DJs.

Expect plenty more playlists and ipods ---the problem for the industry is going to start when i pod owners say---your only playing my music so can you reduce the cost:eek:

Technology wiped out a large number of Live bands---it could happen to Discos--

Theres a marketing and selling job to be done out there---right now:D

Thats what i do. Especially if a current dance act has sampled the track recently. Tracks like Hoxton whores - Gonna make you a star always goes down well because the older people remember it from the first time round and the younger ones like it because its current :) I used to get a lot of good comments about playing the dance mix of I believe in a thing called love as people got fed up of always hearing the original elsewhere :)

Absolutely!

My clients can give me as many requests as they like...even enough for the whole evening (as happened last Saturday), but if they ALSO want to dictate the exact playing order, my answer is a simple NO!

The bride books me to play music, but tells me when to play the songs.I used to be against this, but now i just think, oh well easy night.

Each to their own though. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it - especially if it wasn't working and the other guests thought I was some kind of idiot. We get a lot of business through referrals.

I agree with you both/all, but i am now happy to do as the customer wishes to a degree. Yes it will be boring, yes i doubt the guests will be happy, yes i doubt the floor will be busy. But that is their choice, it is their day and if they want it that way so be it.

I think it is because people look through their Ipods. Make a list of what they like, forgetting that some of the music, although good to listen too at home, may not be so good at a disco. Also they seem to forget about their guests, even after spelling this out to them.

i agree with you, and i feel pretty sure she will get guests running to her after i say "sorry no requests unless the bride says so".
Give it an hour or so i think the list will go. I maybe wrong.
