Internet problems

Hi Folks

Just recently my laptop has lost its internet connection which it shared with my wirless setup PC.
The problem is that the laptop is not sending an IP address or sub gateway, so I managed to set it a new address and the connection has reconnected but I cant seem to get a webpage. Does anyone know what im doing wrong?

Put everything on "obtain automatically" and reboot both.

Take a note of any settings that are in there, though, as this might not work, your setup might need specific settings (I'd need more info).

Thanks again for your reply. I have tried to obtain an IP address automatically which worked before but this time its not finding one only when I manually assign one myself? What settings do you need to know?

Any number of things could be causing it to be honest. Did you say your sharing a connection from your desktop, i.e. not through a router?

If automatic settings worked in the past then you should probably keep them unless you've changed hardware. Have you added any firewall / AV software to either the desktop or the laptop recently? That could be limiting your connection.

Running the network setup wizard on both machines probably wouldn't do any harm.

Hi Marc if you are running XP with IE7 you can use the built in diagnostics

However if you are running Vista it should automatically give you a choice
Failing that the better idea ,as already mentioned is to set it all up again,or reset your router

Hi Guys

Yes I share my internet connection with the Wanadoo/Orange wireless reciever which is connected to my main PC. I have recently installed AVG virus software which I have since shutdown whilst tryinmg to connect but still no connection. Its really annoying as it worked perfect about 2 to 3 weeks ago?

go to command prompt, then type ipconfig
then list what you get here.
is the router 192.168.0.1?
if so maybe type in your browser 192.168.0.1 to enter the routers RUI then reboot it or somewhere on it will be a reset button to totally reset the router.

are you going to the command prompt?
start-programs-accessories-command prompt?

all ipconfig just gives you a very small amount of information eg ipconfig/all gives you the DNS details if there is a problem there it will not tell you in ipconfig!

I understand the difference, but for the problem in the thread, i just think it offers too much info that is not needed. IMO

Hey guys, I have typed in ipconfig but all its is saying is "Windows ip configuration" I have since tried to plug the network cable lead into my laptop instead of the wireless and it still wont connect. How can this just stop working????? Very confused.

what no ip address or gateway etc? go to device manager see if there are any ! against the network card. Try reloading the drivers. can you do a screen shot of what you get?

It's a long shot, but I don't suppose there's a button on your laptop to disable wireless?

Mine has, it's right on the front and easily knocked off by accident. Some are push buttons and others slide to the side. This would disable the network and give the symptoms you're describing.

have you reset the hub? is its ip 192.168.0.1 ( it will be the gateway address in ip config) if so connect cable to hub. then go start run in the box type ping 192.168.0.1 ( with space after ping)
see if the pc can see the hub

If you have drivers for the pc maybe uninstall the network side of it then reinstall.
have you by any chance changed from a workgroup to a domain?
Right click my computer go to properties then the computer name tab. see if it says workgroup

the IP could also be 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.2.2 so try those if the above dont work

let us know what model modem you have, that will help.
if it is a DWL-G710 it has an ip of 192.168.0.30 and Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0

Ok go to control panel,click on network connections then click on the status tab,then on the support tab
Clicking on the support tab should read something like this ip address,subnet mask and default this should give you the numbers that you your computer is using

As you can see I now have a connection but cant get a website up, it shows a small pad lock on the connection? Any other ideas.

ah i see. You have no gateway address, thats the router address.
try clicking repair. Also try the ipconfig again, you need to be seeing a gateway address

* Try going to the 'advanced TCP/IP settings ' in your LAN connection properties and manually enter the default gateway address and click OK.*

you are missing the Default Gateways!!!! Why don't you allow the system to give the laptop the settings?

Check with your ISP, it could be MAC address of the PC connected not being cleared.reset the modem and either reboot or ipconfig/release and then renew and reconnec.

• When obtaining an IP address configuration using the user-configured alternate configuration, the default gateway is the IP address specified in the Default gateway field on the Alternate Configuration tab for the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component in Network Connections. For an alternate configuration, you can specify only a single default gateway.

• When manually specifying an IP address configuration, the default gateway is the IP address typed in the Default gateway field on the General tab for the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component. To specify additional default gateways, you must add them from the IP Settings tab in the advanced properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component.

(TCP/IP) highlight it then click properties under that make sure the following boxes are ticked obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS SERVER ADRESSES AUTOMATICLY

Sorry mate ,its getting late and I for one are tired:D I know you said something about it but I wasn't sure if you had mentioned the DNS part or not
I really think the best thing is for the whole lot be be uninstalled and re-installed again

I have everything set manually, with DNS and default gateway pointing to the router address. If I remove the DNS gateway, I can't connect to the internet, exactly as per this problem.
