Do I really need them THAT big?

Hi All

I was looking around on the net for some speakers, and happened across a PA hire company in Bristol that reckon for a medium venue with up to 200 people, I need to hire a rig with the following:

2 x 600 Watt RMS Full Range Cabs
2 x 600 Watt RMS Sub Woofer Cabs
2 x 500 Watt RMS DJ Monitors
1 x Peavey CS 4000 Amp
1 x Peavey PV 1500 Amp
2 x Technics Decks or 2 x Pioneer CDJ Decks
DJ Mixer
Stands, Leads & Accessories
Outboard EQ / Crossover
1 x Microphone

I was thinking that I would need a pair of 250/300 watt rms (each) and a power amp of maybe 1000w. I already have a DM 950 to mix my laptops with.
Is it me, or are they being a bit OTT?

But then you've never used them, so how would you know? :p

I would always use a sub or 2 for anything over around 100 people as it gives the music a much smoother and more rounded sound.

I don't really see how the rig is OTT. It's not exactly a massive system at 2.4kw, the monitors perhaps a bit excessive, but perhaps it's all they have in stock? Youu could get away with a much smaller system, but it's always nice to have a bit of 'oomph'.

Monitors don't really need to be that big I agree.

The rest of it sounds about right for a nice full sound.
I take out 2.4kw pretty much as standard:

3way/tri-amped

2 x 800w PD1850's (Subs)
2 x 400w (Mid/Tops)

I don't think its over the top at all. Seems about right to me, and is roughly what I take out to my gigs (apart from the monitors.. don't really need them for weddings etc. but like to have one for gigs when i'd do alot of mixing)

My moto is "you can never have too much" !! You can always turn it down, but if you have 200 people wanting dance/rnb and even older music (think disco and funky 80s) with nice basslines, then a pair of 300w speakers just isn't going to cut it!

Yes, and now I would take out 1.5Kw, but only 'cos it's what I have. I don't think you NEED that much. Since I upgraded I have to say that it is absolutely true that:-
