Second wedding last night, went O.K.....buffet music puzzled me a bit so will need to work at that but after everyone had eaten the manager came up to me and asked 'Have you been invited to eat?'...I said no...his reply was 'Well i'm inviting you to'.

Question is do you take it from him that it's 'Help yourself time' or do you wait for the invite?

As the B & G have paid for it, should it be them to invite you or do you take it as read from the manager?

I went home starving as I thought it rude!!:(

if your invited then i say feel free to go up and help yourself, remember the B & G have enough stress to worry about and will sometimes forget the wee guy in the corner (yup the one with the flashing lights and loud music - the one who makes more noise than anyone else lol) and sometimes expects people like the manager to sort out the other stuff like staff and sub contracters etc so if the hotel say help yourself - feel free to do so, i normally have my tea before i go out so dont alwasy eat but sometimes i do

Can't speak for anybody else Tony but if it's not offered I won't touch the food.

Most do offer and if the manager/wedding organiser is doing the offering then I would definately take him/her up on it.......................had some really good stuff at the better venues.

That said my gig last night was in our village hall and the food was exceptional, the bride & her family are Afro-caribbean; goat curry, jerk chicken, stew-beef dumplin', patties, red snapper, rice&peas, rum punch, red stripe, crucial brew and only 200yrds from home. Wife came and drove the van back............don't drink & drive kids!! :)

I understand the B&G have plenty to worry about and little old me is not on their list....agreed.
Normal I have something to eat but the last few days have been quite a rush...checking gear and getting set up as well as looking after the kids...sorry can I hear a violin... even left without my water for the night....that hurt paying for soft drinks.

I think i'm to polite......:o

If an offer comes, which it usually does, I always accept...regardless of whether it's from hotel staff or the happy couple, although I DO tend to wait until everyone else has gone up first.

Many's the time I've also been offered a small box & asked to take some food home...even loaves of bread...which again I'm happy to do!

After all...I'm sure we've all seen how much food goes into the bin liners at the end of the night.

That's so true, nearly every single time the majority of the buffet is wasted. If I know anyone who is planning a function, I always tell them to hold back on the buffet, but they never listen, because they are afraid they won't have made enough (never, ever seen a buffet wiped out)! :rolleyes:

As you hinted, I think they'd rather have too much food, even if some does get thrown away...than run out half way through the evening, which would be very embarrassing!

I was invited to help myself to a buffet on one occasion, unbeknownst to the B&G there was insufficient carvery meats for the guests and the last four guests to the buffet, and I, went without.

The Bride and Groom were ripped off by the venue at every turn but were too nice to say anything, that is until I told them what the guests were too polite to tell them. I decided that telling them would at least get them a hefty discount, which it did ;)

Why bother though? Does anyone really care if there is no buffet left? Most people only take a plate because it's there, and most have eaten before they went out

Well, in my case, I wouldn't want the main topic of conversation about my wedding reception revolving around the fact that the food ran out half way through the evening!

I'm not sure I agree that most people only take a plate because it's there & most have eaten before they went out...

...surely if they aren't hungry, they either won't go up or will just get one or two very small items.

Also, if people are going to a wedding reception where there is free food, would they REALLY eat just before leaving home? I wouldnt!

That's a bit like booking a table for two in a restaurant, and eating a meal at home just before you leave for the restaurant!

I wouldn't do that either!
One plateful from the buffet is a drop in the ocean compared to the size of most of them. I think everyone feels obliged to go up, but the majority wouldn't mind if there wasn't a buffet (especially if there are snacks on every table, which is often the case).

As for weddings, well, the main guests usually have their meal beforehand. I can't believe that anyone would miss a meal so they can fill up on the buffet later, that's crazy! :eek:

The typical buffet is probably the least healthy food you can eat!

Most people do offer and if they do I accept but if they dont I wont. Certainly an invite from the management is always accepted. In the terms and conditions of the standard SEDA contract it states that "the dj shall not be expected to perform for more than four hours without refreshment". It doesnt say that they have to provide it but in most cases they do.
