I am after making some Bass bins and have an oppertunity to purchase these at a knock down price....
question is are they any good?
I can also get the cabin designs as well...

I use Eminence Speakers in Cabs I built and like them lots.

You could get them cheaper from BK Electronics http://www.bkelec.com/Pro/Drive_Units/Eminence/SigmaPro18.htm (its where I get mine from).

Cheers Tony....I can get them for £75 each with design's for the cab's....think thats a good buy....just need to know if they any good or is anyone using this type. Sounds like you are...:)

I can't afford to buy new so....i'll have a bash a building....for that price can't go wrong and still make if I fail!!:)

Biggest I've used are Kappa Pro 15" as 18" would be to big for me to transport and to heavy to carry. My tops are also powered by Eminence 12" drivers for the mid range and compression drivers for the highs, I am a bit of an Eminence fan so my opinion might be a bit biased :) .

Tony I used to have a pair of bins with these in. They've got a very good spl of 98db for 1w@1mtr.
Or in plain english the higher the spl the more efficient (louder) the speaker is. If you don't use them I will buy them from you........great drivers! :)

I thought they were good....buying things is just killing me at the moment..need to put some skills into use....and anything I come across whilst doing this....I will share the infromation on here.
Think i'm going to buy them....looking at them Wednesday.

2 x Peavey 2600 amps (2.6kW ea) for sale. Ones in good nick the other is not so good but good enough. :confused: :p

I use an Eminence 15 for mid and bass range in my small set up.

To be honest, 98db 1w @1mtr is not that great. A good SPL for a bass driver would be in the region of 106db - 110db 1w@1mtr, each 3db equals a doubling of power, but then the cost of the better spec drivers rises exponentially.

Loaded in a folded horn you will get about 106 - 110db from a 98db driver.

I agree that 98db is poor for a bass cab but not so for a bass driver.

I use pd1850 18", they are also rated at 98db. The pd1850 driver is regarded as the best 18" driver available and are used by Martin Audio, Turbosound, Funktion One.........I could go on.

My bass horns produce 109db for 1w@1mtr and have 98db for 1w@1mtr drivers, they also have a max spl of 139db. It's all about the cab!

The sigma18's are very good drivers and for what they going to cost Tony are exceptional value for money.

Nothing wrong with eminence drivers best of the low cost drivers and thats a good price.What sort of cabs are you going to build, reflex ,horn, band pass,if your going to build folded horns which are really only suited to long throw applications make shure you dont get out of phase with your mid tops. Building cabs is not cheap if you do it correct so the cost will be much greater than the drivers. If you need any advice just shout as i have been building speakers for many years as a living .TONYTIGER

Not really, the Viper subs I use are rated at 98db, but I don't reckon there's many compact reflex boxes out there that will outperform it.

Sorry Jamie was a bit harsh with that statement, 98db is not really poor and you usualy find that the bass response is a bit better if the SPL is lower, just means you have to put a bit more power in which is never really an issue with Amps today.

A case in point is the PD186, it is rated 2db lower than my PD1850's but has a better lower frequency response. Which is what it's made for. :)

he even had someone from martin audio with his head up the bass bin trying to work out how he made them

Bass Horn design is quite complex.

Over the years I've experimented with all types of designs, some awful some very good but companies like Martin Audio spend fortunes on design. Currently I have 4 of thesehttp://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=1850horn.

I met Dave Martin a couple of times before he vanished, really nice fella, he would definately have stuck hie head up inside a bin, horn speakers were his life. :)

the 1850 bin is an excellent bin only heard them in groups though

what are they like on their own, other people say you have to have at least couple two of the togtether so their as a larger mouth area.
