Hi just wondered if you use a roadie how much do you pay them on average?

When I was over in Northern Ireland I had 2 roadies.

One of them was happy with a couple of bottles of wine, the other one got 20quid a night plus he was learning the ropes and of course my accountant knows all about them.

both times ive had one before they learned the joys of beer and women at the weekends which is why im reluctant to take on another despite desperately needing one i gave them 20-25 quid a night depending on the work involved etc.

Ok guys, my roadie (who is only an every now and then) is paid per hour.

£4.29 (say a 6pm setup through to a 1am in car on way home) is 7 hours = £30.03

I'm obviously over paying him. lol

I must admit...I had no idea that the National minimum wage was so low for 16 & 17 year olds...but you learn something every day!

Looks like i pay my roadie too much then.... Generally he gets £35 per gig and then gigs over £300 he gets extra on top..... As well as that i pay for all drinks during the gig and food at the end of the night too and he gets picked up from his house and dropped back there at the end of the night....

Well I think you're spot on, although it looks like it's just you and me.

I have a set of rates for mine:

evening only disco - £30
Wedding with early set up - £40
All day wedding (generally midday - midnight) - £50
After midnight £10 per hour

ha ha ha nope in that situation or ones like it i would just turn around to the roadie and say look it might be a bit dangerous doing what we are about to do and dont feel you have to do it..... It's your choice

Not many probably--but thats their problem when they lose their ALL THEIR ASSETS because of a claim against them.

Ignorance of the law is no defence.

If its cost---well thats another thread--I imagine eventually a Roadie will get killed and then the lid will get blown off.:D

If a large bloke in London trips over a flower petal and gets a million quid----whats a Roadies family going to get if hes killed---he wont be a Merchant Banker but in todays world the award could still be very high.

Th point is though, there are unlikely to be many.

A lot of our big coperate gigs use 3 phase generators and you must balance the phases to within 10% so you need to know what your doing , also do a lot of festivals allways 3 phase. TONYTIGER

Wouldn't it be boring if we all had the same opinions though?

And I was pointing out that not many, if any at all, single operators with roadies, are not going to have employers liability insurance and then you get examples of people being killed with electricity.

People won't be scaremongered into buying insurance because of one example that probably wasn't even a DJ anyway.

Most DJs that have roadies, are there mates or relations I reckon, so I can't honestly see people sueing their own brother or best mate 'cos they tripped on a stair.

My own opinion of course.

Firstly i mentioned 3 phase and it was pointed that most djs dont come across it if i recall correctly there was quite some discussion about working in marquees a lot of companys who provide the marquee will also provide the generator quite often or not this will be a 3phase genny now ouite popular for cost and power reasons, and i was simply trying to give advice how dodgy this can be to the unwary this aplies to everybody including one man operators.yes the young man in question was not a dj just a djs helper.But let me ask you this if you had a mate that helped you on your disco free or payed and he had a serious accident while helping you what would you do?Its quite amazing how little health and saftey there is in the industry generaly, i mean look at the construction idustry 110v site inspector etc yet you can stick 500 people in a tent and have 240v running all over the place in damp conditions and no offical to check its safe i work with 8 marquee companys and none have a qualifed electrcian and thats the norm. As for insurance that is purley your choice, i had none till the accident to the young man but it made me think hard so its now in place yes im not making so much profit but i sleep easy. I am coming to the end of my career in this industry and have made a good living out of it for 42 years all im trying to do is pass on some of my knowledge to some of the up and coming djs and some of them will hopefully make a career out of it in some form or another.

Can't disagree with a word of that, perhaps it's just that to many people the electricity is simply what comes out of the cable in the corner, as if by magic! They don't know any more, and believe they don't need to. I'm not getting in a dig at anyone, just stating what I believe to be the situation.
The one thing above all which stands out, is make sure all sensible safety measures should be taken at all times.
