Testing my speakers

I was testing my speakers this afternoon. These are the speakers that I paid £15 for (the pair), they have a 15" mid/bass 200w 8ohm woofer with a separate horn and tweeter. I haven't got an amp yet (still looking) so I borrowed my daughters mini hi-fi system from her bedroom and connected the speakers into the back of it. The 15" drivers work, but I didn't hear anything from the horns or tweeters. Is it because they are not connected properly (they may not be), or is it because these speakers work differently when driven by a proper amp? I'd like to know so that I know where to start looking.

Have a look inside the speaker box. Then you can see if they are wired up, or have a loose wire.

This could be a minefield, but IMHO best odds are blown tops. ( or crossover if fitted.) Look inside, and you should have either your top speakers wired acroo your subs ( ie in parallel) or everything fed from a crossover. If there is a crossover, then you can try bypassing it, and check each component individually.( at very low volume!) If no crossover, I'd bet on blown tops. Let's hope for a missing wire!:)

Hello John, if your ever passing Thrapston area on the A14 nip in and see me for a test.

Ive got loads of amps and mixers here to test speakers properly with.

Soon tell you whats wrong, if you have no experience of speakers and fault finding then it might be quicker that way:D

I dont really think so as it takes alot of power to move the Botten end speaker speakers and a pizo / Compression!!

even so there should have been some sound? best way try a 9volt battery and do+ to + and- to - the speaker cone should move outwards. if not take them apart and just try the woofer staright onto the battery if nothing happens then its a duffen, also have a smell around the driver make sure the voice coil hasnt burned out.

Yeah batter ytest is most reliable to check tops if you dont have real amp available. If it was a compression horn a mini hi fi probably wont make it do anything. Surprised the woofer moved. Most home mini systems are only rated to about 15 watts per side, more expensive are better but mini's tend to be very low. Be careful or you could blow the output transformer on the hi fi. Done it myself once and never again.

Thanks guys. The woofers definitely work. I put a cd on which contained music and speech. All sounded fine (although one woofer did buzz a little bit) but it was the horn and tweeter that I didn't hear.

Connect a 9v battery and look for movement? On the horn and the tweeter, where would I need to look, they appear to be sealed, plastic 'trumpet' type thingies!

you dont need it for the horn as it should just crackle or make a noise.

Have you got a simple test meter just put one probe on the + and one on the - you should get a reading that tells you the circuit is intact
