I can suggest several things but they are pretty obvious but I hope they might help.
A pentium 4 2 ghz is not very fast at all by modern standards and that would be a bottleneck.
512 mb of ram is considered very low these days memory is cheap buy some.
what operating system are you using? XP is very bad for using memory and processor power and as they bring out new updates it requires more and more power to make them work. The official amount of memory and processor power XP recomends now (this changed recently) 1gb ram and at least a 3ghz processor.

Other things to try , defrag your hardrive, run scandisk, make sure there are no unwanted or uneeded programs running in the background. Also if its an intel they are pron to slowdown when they heat up so ake sure to keep any fans clean using an airduster same with intake and extracter vents.
What speed is your hardrive, many people are not aware that drives come in differnt speeds, 4200 5400 7200 and 10.000 are the most popular the faster the drive the faster it can access the data. Also interface can make a difference but normally to a lesser degree. If you have a 7200 you are ok as this is considered the norm for a home system. 5400 or below is not fast enough for dj type programs that require faster access.

I know its a lot of info but I hope it can help you identify your problem.

Sorry to disagree Spin, but that is plenty of power to run FX. A little more RAM might help.

Have a look here and optomise your machine for music. http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php

only an idea is all your music in one file if so try splitting it up into a few files with less songs in each

Agreed, although you have to consider all the other Apps running (be it AntiVirus/Firewalls) even things like having MSN in the tray will use memory and minimal processing power. That's not to mention the O/S itself.

Callum, I would advise the problem isn't with PCDJ, it's with the other software you have got running. I take it you are using this PC as your everyday PC too?

If that's the case, try closing open applications, when you boot up the PC at a gig (right clicking items in the tray near the clock and selecting exit.) You don't need your firewall etc in a Village Hall, nor do you need your Anti Virus. Just don't connect yourself up to any networks!
