Hey there chaps.

I have a pair of cabs sat around doing nothing. They are rather big but only 200watts.

I was thinking of loading them with something along the lines of.....
a 15 inch 200watts driver
a 12 inch 150/175 watt driver
and a horn

Through a 3 way crossover

How will this sound. I know that the cabs will have been designed for the other wattage specifically but will it at least do.

WIll it just not sound right.
Will it be ok.???

Cabs are normally designed with a particular driver in mind when made. Not saying that this is always true but most of the time it it. Not really worth mixing a 12 and 15 in a box better to have either 2 x 12's or 2 x 15's then tweeter. That is my experience in the past but im sure others will have differing views.
I would go for 2 x 15's myself if you have room , 2 x 12's only if you dont.

Ok, what cofiguration are they at present. Are they 1x 15 + 1 x 12 + 1 X horn. or do you intend to cut new holes in a new baffle board?

What are they made from, are they a branded make or not.

When putting the 12" driver in it will have to have a seperate chamber from the 1 x 15, is this already there.

What is the external dimension of the cab & what is the thickness of the material, 19mm/3/4"

Done this sort of thing all my life, so answer some of these questions and I can give you some advice no problem. :)

Originally they had a 8'' and 15'' with a small round compression driver(or something of that sort)

The 8' is in a seperate compartment within the cab.

It seems to be 3/4'' chipboard or similar material.

The dimentions are 1''3'x1''6'x3''4'

Ok, I would suggest you go down the route of 2 x 15" + 1 x HF horn.

You can run the 15" speakers direct full range and they will cut off themselves at about 3.8khz.

The horn can be run through a simple filter which would be a:
(2.2 uF poly capacitor and an 8ohm resistor) I can build this for you and post it, cost about £3.00 for the two of them.

(No need for a 2way x-over, the filter acts as a x-over and stops any bass/mid frequencies from getting to the HF horns) This works very well, I have used this system for over 20yrs!!!

This would give you a really good sound with 400/600wRMS/per cab(depending on the drivers). 4ohm per cab.

I can work out the Port sizes for you if you go down this route. With the drivers I have suggested there would be no need for 3 way as the drivers produce a response up to about 4khz, this is about where the horn would take over.
