Would it be even possible to get some kind of consensus as to how many songs one can get away with (at a bare minimum) to do most all-ages functions? Are there one- or two-thousand core songs that make up 90-95% of all requested songs from the mid-50s through to now?

For the record I think having all number one hits from the 50s to now is kinda pointless as, for some reason, more currently useful songs came out in '78/'79 than just about any other 1-2 year period.

I think it's impossible to answer this, as it depends entirely on what percentage of customers requests you want to have.

Allowing for duplicates, I probably have about 5,000 different songs, and I'd say I have at least 90% of all requests...which I think is reasonable. I don't see the point in doubling my amount of CDs just to increase that figure by a few percent, as it wouldn't make any noticable difference.

As for having all number one hits, I totally agree this is a complete waste of time. If anyone doesn't believe me, look through the list of number ones & see how few you actually play at gigs.

My mp3 catalogue is divided into two - my "Master Playlist" and my "Library".

Consider that I undertake a very wide variety of gig types.

My Master Playlist serves, on average, 95% of all music I play. The other 5% are those odd 'deep dives' to find unusual requests or songs to fit themed parties. Of course, I occasionally move stuff from Library to Master Playlist and vice versa, probably about twice a year.

Master Playlist currently consists of just over 4,200 songs. Library is over 58,000. I can't remember the last time I couldn't satisfy a request - oh hang on that's a lie - it was in January this year and was for a specific mix of a non-charting trance song :o
