We were having a quick go on a quiz machine last night and a question came up about the IOW.

It asked "What did the Roman's call the IOW" I pressed Vectis and got it wrong...:(

What does it mean then and where did it come from?

Vectis is a Celtic name I believe. Roman name was Insula (with a v) ie Insvla.

But don't ask me... I'm from oop north! ;)

OK, ta - was just interested to know.

I don't like getting beaten by quiz machines.

Which is pretty crap, really, as that just means 'Island'.

pretty crap, really, that Island

Ah! You've been here :p

Actually for all its foibles it's a fab place to live. Well chilled out. Quiet. Great weather. Wouldn't want to move off unless for warmer climes.

isn't it shrinking in size at a rather alarming rate?

Don't wanna take a wrong turn in the maze at black gang chine.. :)

Creative editing, there, Vectis. No, I haven't - only English island I've been to is Sheppey, and with that bridge I don't know if 'island' is accurate any more.
