OK so technology's moved on...

But I clearly remember when I started back in the 80's gigging peoples weddings in halls & hotels, kicking off around half seven/eight with a buffet around nine, finishing about 12 with New York New York/Hi Ho/Never Walk Alone etc. and inbetween a bit of disco, rock & roll, 70's, YMCA etc..

Same old music, same old drunken punters demanding 'one more' when you're halfway into the van, same old miserable steward tapping his watch at 10-to-12.... whingeing about the volume

i thinks some things have changed and some haven't.
some for the better, some for the worse.

but ultimately it's about what you make of it.
there's certainly plenty of opportunities if you look for them and are willing to do things differently.

i think weddings are less likely to stick the a set routine nowadays and i like that- makes for a bit of variety, and less frank sinatra.

One things changed - the choice of music now ranges for 6 decades and I find there is less interest in 50s and 60s and more interest in 70s onwards.

only real things that have changed are

we play a lot louder with more powerfull equipment now - in the old days when ya used to go out with 100 watt or so everyone had a great time - now they just wanna turn it up !!!!!!!!!!!

The human condition hasn't changed...

There are still loud, obnoxious, rude drunks, as well as happy and slightly horny drunks, the rhythmically challenged, the show-off (be it body parts or dancing ability, or both ;) ), the nervous dancer, the drunken sing-alonger (who never gets the tempo change in 'American Pie'), and the annoying old guy who thinks it's clever to wolf-whistle vaguely in time to every song he thinks he knows, wannabe DJs, wannabe standing next to the DJ (as if your brilliance will rub off on them), wannabe karaoke star and, finally, the sad prat who waits until the end of the night to inform you that you didn't play a decent song all night and isn't swayed by the argument that they failed to make a request so they only have themselves to blame.

I think the real change today are the punters in the old days Disco was new, viberant,now they could not care less ,yes there are still great gigs but not so frequent.

I think thats true and a lot of younger people ( thats 30 to me!!! ) are more discerning in what they want musically from a DJ --did a wedding Friday for a crowd in their 30s plus parents in their 60s and it was Rat Pack, swing and smooth for first 2 hours---then Barn Dancing followed by a request list from the 60s and 70s--

B and G plus friends were heavily into Louis Armstrong etc---

Chart, R and B, Modern Music--whats that???

Another brilliant Wedding gig---today a call for my Ultimate Country Show at a Wedding:D although the dreaded I pod Disco was mentioned:eek: :eek: :eek:
