Vanished without a trace!

The recent mention of products which have changed their name - such as Jiff becoming Ciff, Oil of Ulay becoming Oil of Olay, Bid-up TV becoming Bid TV & The National Lottery becoming Lotto - got me thinking.

What about products which appear to have completely vanished without a trace rather than just changing their name...how many can you think of?



I'll start with 5 from the confectionary line (my specialist subject!):


Nutty Bars - A long lump of toffee covered in peanuts in a brown wrapper.

Spangles - Hard boiled sweets. Very boring, but also popular.

Bazooka Joe bubble gum - which contained a folded piece of paper with a cartoon.

Cabana - Similar to a Bounty, but the coconut centre was pink rather than white.

Texan bars. Basically a hard bar of toffee covered in a thin layer of chocolate. Advertised with the slogan "Texan - it sure is a mighty chew"

Yes...I remember Trios, although Tudor crisps are a new one on me!

Out of everything mentioned, I only remember Trios. To be honest, caramel Rockys are just as good, it's no loss to anyone!

Does anyone remember Jolly Ranchers? They were really nice fruit sweets, and there was a 'phase' about 10 years ago they were really popular (well, with us teenagers they were!), but then they sunk without trace. I just looked it up, and it seems that the company that made them were bought over in 1996 by Hersheys, and production stopped at the same time. I reckon retailers were given the backstock at discount prices, which would explain everything!

Why is no-one manufacturing Worcestershire Sauce chips any more?

Not Walkers, not anyone, as far as I could tell, when I was in the UK last :(

Al, I was just about to mention Worcestershire Sauce crisps - they were my favourite too :(

Walkers stopped manufacturing them because of the Sudan Red dye scare in the UK - it was mainly found in Worcestershire Sauce. Walkers took the whole flavour off the market and didn't bother to re-introduce them once the scare was over as at the time they deemed it was their least popular flavour.

There were loads of online petitions at the time (I remember signing at least one), and guess what...

Mint Cracknel - Kind of long green mint bar covered with chocolate and used to cut you mouth open when eating it :p .... Ahhhh the good old days.

Anyone else noticed how chocolate bars these days are nowhere near as big as they were when you were a kid?

Like Mars bars for instance. Puny little things. AND they were only 2.5pence when I was at school :(

I've heard this argument several times before, but the chocolate companies always seem to say that their choccy bars have always been the same size.

Assuming that's the case, there must be another explanation, and I have a theory:

When you are a young kid, I the choccy bars probably just SEEM bigger - simply because you are SMALLER. However, when you are fully grown, they just SEEM smaller.

It's just an idea!

If I remember correctly, they were similar to Aero bars, but with smaller bubbles...which meant more chocolate! :D

They sort of have, and sort of haven't - Cadburys reviewed their range in 2003, and incorporated a few lines into their 'Dairy Milk' range. The Wispa was re-introduced as 'Dairy Milk Bubbles'.. :cool:

Yeah they had white and blue packaging, can't get them anymore here in N.I., the white chocolate ones outran the milk chocolate.

I do miss the old wispa bars they were much better than aero. Marathon bars of course bit the dust and became snickers (why???) Spring onion crisps seem to have gone as well. Didnt tudor crisps become kettle crisps?
Any one remember those crisps shaped like a little pig? Quatro drinks were very poular in the 80's and completely vanished.

I remember the old Jamaica rum & raisin choc...it was YUMMY!

Also remember Freddo. If I recall rightly, the choccy was in the shape of a frog & there was a frog joke on the wrapper.

Apparently they wanted to bring Creamola Foam back but had lost the recipe - there was a campaign to find any unopened tin and send it to them to "reverse engineer" :)

I just read up about Snickers on Wikipedia (did I just say that?! :o), and apparently it is the world's biggest selling chocolate bar, ahead of the Mars Bar, which I thought would have been the biggest selling. I'm sure the Mars Bar is the biggest selling in the UK though.
