I've been really lucky lately with access to all my venues. Most i've been able to pull right upto the doors of the room i'm in. Even the hotels.
Is anyone having the opposite, nightmare gigs:eek:

I've also been lucky so far this year, with all gigs being on the ground floor and having easy access.

It all goes pear shaped now though...the next two Saturdays gigs are BOTH on the first floor, and there are no lifts...just stairs.

Looks like I'll be sweating off a few more pounds!

Most of my recent gigs have had pretty rubbish access, i blame the fact that i've just bought a trolley and wheeled amp rack!

Yep last weeks gig 4 stories up no lift. Thought I was going to have heart attack. Narrow stone fire escape in the blitering heat (no aircon) Got to the top and the staff go are you going to tidy yourself up a bit before you start @!!!@%&***** and other expletives. I always carry change of clothes in suit bag but it was the cheek of it after watching me lug this stuff up no offer of help all sitting round a table drinking.
ANd the client insisted this was a ground floor gig. ppfffff

Done a birthday in an officers social club at nearby prison what a blooming nightmare up 4 flights of stairs through 2 sets of doors with auto shutters 'sob' then across the main function hall up onto a staged area I was knackered after one speaker let alone anything else. Thank goodness it was a cold night it warmed me up. Down side having to reload after the event fell down a flight of stairs with a speaker putting my back in agony for a week..... Luckly bar man eventually decided to hep us finish loading. And then after he tells me theres a lift Grrrr????? I have since warned future customers, that it will cost alot more at this venue due to these stairs as I have to employ a roadie for this night as well most go and book at my local venue for cheapness

Well on the 1st Sept im at Shotley Marina Ipswich ( maybe with Rice)
so you never know I might get a hand up to the first floor where the gig is being held:D :D :D

They diidnt tell me it was upstairs but I have my local spies--(Rice) so I banged £50 on my usual price.

I assume we all charge an extra £50 for really awkward gigs?????

Think I would have said--as you have made a mistake please get some people to help me ---or im going home--the client has invalidated your contract by accidental or deliberate means---in my opinion.

Last time I got caught out--client didnt mention it was upstairs using steep difficult fire escape WITH VERY LIMITED ACCESS--I only took half the kit in with me--otherwise I would have taken half the night to get loaded afterwards.

I have this in my terms & conditions:

If there are access problems which were not previously advised to us by the client, we may apply a surcharge of up to £50, to be paid in cash before we remove any equipment from our vehicles.

Never had to enforce it yet, though.

Never have the problem myself.

My basic package is small enough that tricky access doesn't matter.

My mid & top packages both include a meeting onsite with the client. Final price isn't agreed until after the meeting. Beforehand they get an estimate "subject to no significant modification of the details already provided". The majority of the time there are no changes to the original quote. Usually its tricky access or extra services that bump it up.

Oh, and I always carry a roadie even for the simplest gigs.

I can't see that you would? How would you define 'access problems'? You could call 3 steps access problems if all your gear is on wheels surely?

No Darren, I don't think I'd ever have to.

In reality, if I don't know the venue, I ask the clients about access at the time of booking.

I know it's a bit vague, but I noticed a few mobiles had something similar in their t & c...and thought it might be a good idea to include it in mine.

Edit: Something just occurred to me...I reckon having to carry the gear over a load of picnic tables in 3 feet of water might possibly qualify as access problems! :rolleyes:

So far been ok, had to trek down the back through the kitchens a couple of times.

Playing the "Grand Ballroom" at the Europa hotel this saturday which should be fun, unloading and trying not to get the van towed while im in the lift!
