Got a puzzling question I need answering.

Everyday I travel down the M5 to my day job and every year or so in the same spot I see workman erecting tall scaffoldings either side of the motorway with a large net drooping over the motorway connecting them? The scaffolding and net is then left like this for a few weeks and then removed.... Anyone know why??? :confused:

They're working on overhead cables. At some point, usually when there's very little traffic, they'll be dropped and will straddle the road. Mostly this is when they're being replaced.

But there isnt any overhead cables near to where they have erected it????

Sure? They don't necessarily have to be the 400KV pylons, might be dinky little ones serving farms etc. or even telephone cables.

I'd also love to know the answer to this one.

I recently noticed exactly the same thing on the A3.

It has me completely stumped, and there were no power cables or anything else nearby, and after a few weeks it suddenly disappeared!

I've seen this before, and vectis is right, it's supposed to be for working on overhead cables. Are you absolutely sure there were no cables there? :confused:

Ah a picture thats exactly what it looks like. I have to say they didnt lay the net under the pylons as they are about a mile away from the set up. Thanks thats cleared that up. :D
