Hi all,

Well , I bit the bullet and will be appearing in the December supplement in Brides magazine as a "recommended" wedding Dj. Basically it's a CD rom with a map of the UK ,the client clicks their area and it gives them ads for all they should need for there wedding day via direct web links and they've told me its only one dj per region so hopefully that'll tie up next years wedding diary.

Their graphic dept is designing me an ad which i'll have the copyright to which is a bonus, not cheap but it "should" pay for itself a few times over.

Anyone else on here going to be appearing? I'm pretty sure there's one other from this forum but wont name names just in case!

Is it really cheeky to ask how much this costs?

Thought someone would ask!!!

Ok, to explain the package. They're designing an ad for me and the magazine (same publishers as GQ & Esquire) has a monthly circulation of approx 59,000, cover price of £4.50 so not a lidl publication! The pr is handled by atlantic multimedia in London on behalf of "Brides" , cd rom is attached to the front cover so you cant really miss it ! Only one dj per region is "recommended" now although im in Derbyshire i've taken the NE region which emcompasses form South Yorkshire up and past Geordieland so plenty of potential clients.

And the cost????????

Have a guess, it would be interesting to see what you'd pay for this!

I'm not going to post publicly as I know for sure there is another forum user who has signed up and not sure if they want it known or not so pm's will be sent!!!!!!

Out of interest, did they approach you?
If there is more than one DJ per area interested, how do they decide which one goes in, if its only one per regin / area.

They did approach me, said it was due to being PLI and PAT compliant that they selected me! Originally the approach was made while I was still in Northern Ireland to be the one dj for the whole province, when I told them I was relocating they offered me the NE region as the Midlands had already gone. they did admit to a slight fopar on their part as they hadn't divded the Midlands into east and West.

Now i dont know if I was the first one they spoke to but at the time with me moving over it seemed like a good way to fill (hopefully) next years wedding gigs.

I purchased a 1/4 page ad in a bridal magazine, but one that would only be given out to brides going to that shop...

The ad cost me £450 (inc vat) for 2 years....

So I would imagine that this ad you are talking about cost about £600-700?

Am I right?

I can't see that it makes any difference to anyone if you put the cost on here?

Last year I bought an ad in a bridal directory published by a local newpaper group. Cost me a few hundred pound, and I can't pinpoint any enquiries that came from it. I've just forked out over a hundred pound for an ad in a local newspapers bridal feature...time will tell if that's been another waste of cash.

Ok then,

For all you that want to know it comes in at 320 pounds inc VAT. I think thats very reasonable for the return that should happen.

I think that's very reasonable. With a 59,000 target audience, maybe 10% will actually see your advert, so that's almost 6000 people. I don't know what proportion are in 'your area', but if you get a 1% response from the 10% who see your advert, that's 60 people. If you convert 10% into bookings, that's 6 clients at your normal fee. Then maybe you will benefit from the perceived prestige of seeing you in a glossy magazine, plus people pass the cd to other potential brides. It's not always about the first bite of the cherry, so-to-speak. Good business, and tax deductable.

I went in to Your Surrey Wedding at a cost of £250 for a months publication and I did not get one reply from it. Worst move i have ever made.

Interesting info, Steve...coz they keep hassling me to advertise with them, and I was seriously thinking about it.

Not after you comments, though!

These things dont always work out as you would like them to, these kind of percentage estimates are reasonable but as you find out in selling---doesnt always work:(

If it was that good wouldnt everyone be doing it?

Good luck anyway with it--

Quite true, but the taxman will pay a fair proportion of the cost (but not all) so the financial risk isn't that much. Maybe Spirits High will keep us updated on the ROI.

funny enough i got a call of the same calaber i said i wasnt intrested i though yes they might say i was the only dj in the north east but they might put others in the publication to make money
if it was true why didnt they just give you your local town
i think people from newcastle wouldnt pay for a disco from out of the region
lots of people in newcastle want the cheapest they can get

The reason I didn't get the Midlands was it had already gone. They were selling regions not towns

I have it in the contract they there will be no other djs listed from the area or i pay no cash.

I think its a safe bet but time will tell. As I said it takes in the region from S Yorkshire ie Sheffield right up and beyond Newcastle. Am gambling on a bit of work coming from the York / Harrogate areas but like I said i'll suck it and see.

I've heard that same 'reason' quoted in every part of the UK, and relating to pretty much every sort of business. Driving instructors (my current profession) are always saying that because of where they live, they can't charge more! So...these people in Newcastle, who want the cheapest that they can get...all driving second-hand Skodas? Or are they willing to pay a bit more for something 'better';)
