external hard drive rpm

i use pcdj and it recommends my hard drive is 7200 rpm
ive looked with interest at the toughdrive they sound perfect for mobile disco life but they are around 4200rpm does this make a lot of difference

I use the toughdrive pro 120 and 160GB models and they're 5400 spin. I think some of the smaller ones (40/60/80GB might be 4200).

Work without any problems whatsoever on laptop with OTS DJ and on my Numark d2 director.

i think the faster the rpm of the external hard drive the better it will perform becuse it can access and retrive the song faster. I use traktor 3 and my Behringer BCD 3000 with a 320gb toshiba with 7200rpm and works really fast and efficiant. sorry for my spelling.

i use an external drive with 7200 at the moment but i wanted to get a spare at 7200rpm i get ni glitches i just need to know how pcdj works with a hard drive running at 5000 ish rpm because i would like a toughdrive

i would think it should work fine if u got the toughdrive on pcdj. just dont overload your clicking or trying to load up lots of different screen. just keep your laptop desktop free apart from pcdj and it should be ok. thats what i do anyway.

IF you can get the quickest drive possible.... And if the software recommend using a certain rpm speed generally they do this for a reason! If funds allow get kit that is above the recommended limit.

Personally my back up external drive is 7200rpm with a 16mb buffer.. Does the job and never had any issues to date.

The RPM doesn't make a jot of difference if you're only using it for MP3s. Even the slowest drive, at it's slowest point (on the inner zone of the disc), will not drop below 44 megabytes per second, and even taking into account all the hardware and software bottlenecks between the disc and the final output, it's still considerably faster than your average MP3 rate (128-320 kilobytes per second).

The access time is something which should be more of a concern, as it is a vital point for DJing.

Remmember that laptop type 2.5 drives and external 3.5 type drives have different speeds anyway. A laptop drive at 5,400 is quite normal and a good speed but 7200 - 10,000 is good for a desktop drive its all a matter of balance. I use 3 of the laptop type myself 1 for my cortex 1 for my numark and one for backup. All drives are rated at 5,400 rpm and I do not consider slow. USB itself is usually the bottleneck rather than the actual drive itself. Advantage of laptop drives as well is they dont have overheat problems , are a lot smaller, designed for mobile use so more rugged , and also do not require a seperate power supply (in most cases anyway)
