Digital DJ

If I wanted to go down the digital DJ route, downlaoding tunes, usingan mp3/ipod and laptop, what equipment would I need and with what licences?

theres a number of ways to go digital, there are mp3 driven controllers, hard disc mixers etc.

From what i read from your post i think your looking at going the way i have over the past few years.

OK lapstop with software (i use sam party DJ or virtual dj) there are loads of programs available.

Your looking for a decent external soundcard, i don't have one yet but looking to buy the maya 44 soundcard which should do the biz and is highly recommended.

An external drive - usually laptop drives are too small although they have increased in size and lowered in price over the last 6 months.

at least 1mb ram, 2 is even better.

Downloading is ok from itunes, woolies etc but they have DRM, so you need to burn to disc then rip from the disc to remove the DRM, i spend long enough ripping from my CD collection to mp3 then all the tagging....long and tedious

regarding the license - no one seems to have a clue at the moment - so i aint bothered wating money on a license for someone to come along and fine me for not having the correct license anyway - i believe there shoudl be a definte decision soon (pigs might also fly).

It's hardly time consuming! Click search type in a search term digital Dj in this case & look at the results.

Then go through the thread titles until you see a relevant thread. (I've just done this & come back to edit this post in less than2 minutes)

Firstly as Steve says, it's hardly time consuming and compared to spending hours looking round the rest of the internet, it's nothing.

Secondly, it is not a quick question at all. There are many answers to that particular question.

there lots of digital equipment you could use but is it what you want??? If you go for a laptop and hard drive you will spend weeks, even month riping all your cd's onto the hard drive. take a long, long time but when its all done it is a lot easier to "DJ" and find the songs instead of flicking through folders of cd's but i have to agree with these 2, do a little reasearch then if you have any questions still post them up on here.

a lot of DJ's i know use a laptop alongside the cds, they just ripped the most useable songs from their cd collection, onto the computer and this will cover most occasions.

I know a few peeps would at this point comment about carrying 2 formats and the neccesary equipment to play them etc. But you should anyway! this way you make it as easy as possible for yourself on the night and you have the old belt and braces safety net.

I dunno, you put yourselves out to run a forum to help people & what thanks do you get? Whinge, whinge, whinge. Do we ask for thanks? No, does anybody take the time to say what a good job we do? No. It's all take, take, take. We don't have to do this you know, there are plenty of other worthwhile things we could be doing, but no, we give up our free time to help folks out & what do they do? Ask the same questions over & over again, without even a thought for the search button. They have feelings too you know. The search button gets very dejected when nobody uses it, but do you hear it complain? No, it just sits there patiently waiting to help folks out, knowing full well that most of the time it will be ignored. But it accepts it's lot in life & gets on with it, without moaning or complaining, just sitting there, waiting for somebody to show that they care enough to use the facility & make it feel wanted.

Each of the Forums are feeling a bit dejected too. They sit there with pages upon pages of stuff to read & what do you lot do? Read the first page on each one, without a thought for all the things they are waiting to show you on pages 2, 3, 4 & so on.

The Threads themselves aren't feeling much better. People just jump in half way through them, without even thinking about reading what they've had to say previously & often ignoring a very valid point made within the first one or two posts.

Don't even get me started on the mental state of the New Posts button!!!! It thinks people have got it in for it, everybody keeps poking it all the time, poor little thing is covered in bruises!

The Calendar is getting paranoid that it will never be used for anything other than keeping track of members birthdays.

& when was the last time any of you even bothered to rate a thread????? Or to subscribe to one you were interested in? Huh???????
