Does Emmental have to have holes in it?

Babybel Emmental doesn't, is it real Emmental or not?



Isn't it annoying when you've bought a block of Emmental & 1/4 of it is a hole in the middle that you couldn't see until you cut into it?

Surely the cheese making process dictates that the holes are in it for that particular cheese?

It's like saying,does anyone make Guinness without the head. Although they are holes, they are part of the make-up and distinctive look of the cheese.

Surely if you buy the cheese on weight, then you wouldn't be paying for the holes.. well apart from the weight of the air trapped inside, but i imagine that isn't much :D

LOL.. but the weight vs the size of the block should give you a good indication of the proportion of holes inside the cheese. You should take more time deciding which peice to buy :D

I personally never call it Swiss Cheese. And whilst the lack of 'H' may be an acceptable Anglicization of the word the 'H' is there in it's original form.
