* Lighting Advice *

Hiya All,
I'm in the middle of getting my 3rd disco rig and just wanted a bit of advice on choosing some lights. I am looking for 2 dmx lights but with the capability to give out plenty of light to fill a room. In my other rigs I am using spinmaster 3's which are excellent but dont fill the room with colour. Your advice would be appriciated.

Cant go wrong with Genius super quarks but they are pricey .

Pair of datamoons or a pair of Acme Stormbirds.

Or if you want another pair of Spinmaster 3s I'm just about to list a nearly-new set with carry bags on DJ Bids... if I have interest I might just get round to it sooner.

Any of the Acme barrel scanners, Scimitars, Jaguars, iR-5b, Rover, etc...

Sorry none of the fixtures mention in the previous posts will match the Genius range for light output or coverage its a simple fact that the italians make some of the best lighting around

I wouldn't agree and I've used all of the effects apart from the Jaguars.

& I regularly use Jaguars, nice bright effect (especially with a bit of haze)

Interesting i have just run up all the effects mention to see if you were right as i am always willing to learn the test proved as i thought the SUPER QUARKS covered a much greater area and the optics were far superior to the other brands which is what the original question asked and as all ways just trying to give good advice. after all ive only spent 40+ years in the pro lighting market what would i know:zip:

go for the prolight effects with the hid lamps very bright about twice as bright as your spin masters

I went from Spin III's to a pair of Acrobats, much better coverage... and can be had for around the 200 mark s/h now everyone is going to moving heads - and also because people buy 4 of them and find that 4 is too much!

To fill a room with colour, probably a moon flower would be more effective than a barrel?

Good examples:

Twister 4 HP / NJD Datamoon / ACME Puma etc etc budget dependant.

We have 6 Genius Super QUARKs at work, none of which work, all ex nightclub mind. They will be brighter than the above fixtures due to the discharge lamp!

Moving heads got to be HiLine or Clay Paky for reliability at the moment, having nothing but trouble with the Martins and Robe's.

I am surprised. Always thought Martin was up there with the best. Mostly what i read people cant praise Martin highly enough. Must just be certain products that arnt as good :rolleyes:

I've found Martin to be rather hit and miss recently, everything from the MANIA! SCX scanners (2 out of the box with different problems) and several problems with the washes and 500 spots. Even better now everything's in Denmark!!! Waiting for replacements/parts...great.

Having had both Datamoons and Acrobats - how can a moonflower (which projects in a circle on the dancefloor) give more room-filling light than a barrel (which projects onto floor, walls, ceiling...)

I don't think a barrel is a room filling effect - by its nature it covers more of the room, but doesn't stay there though.

Depends on how many you have & how far apart they are.

As for Martin, the oldest effect we have is a Martin Rainbow, still works & was at least 10 years old when we bought it 10 years ago (nice basic effect, but does need smoke or haze)

I'm certainly no expert, but I do have eyes and have seen plenty of live band gigs and mobile discos. Just a personal observation but it isn't just what light you use (make, model,etc) but a big factor is positioning and placement. You COULD fill a room with a simple light wheel and 4 par cans. Wouldn't be very funky but it wouldn't be dark. Whereas, some 'top brand' lights that are aimed in the totally wrong place will not do the job either. Isn't that what makes one roadshow better than another?

Just replaced my 2 ageing Datamoons with 4 Acme Puma's, had all 4 up this weekend and filled the room a treat, also had the 4 dynamos up, was a real room filler and it was a big room.

i used to havw 2 martin ministar 250s 2 rainbow 250s and magic moon on one of my shows never went wrong
