To do it legally involves expense and a great deal of time etc etc. We have enough trouble even getting people to pay a quid a month to help us out, let alone the expense of that.

Legal internet radio may well be cost preventive, as the best way of doing it is via American sites.

A buddy of mine on mojo4music is an internet DJ, I'll let him explain in a quote from a thread posted there.


I'm not sure how many more shows I'll be doing though as it looks like internet radio might be a thing of the past after this month. As from 15th May I think it's going to be too expensive to put on internet radio. Live365 will be affected who stream Mod Radio UK.

To be fair Callum, when I was talking about my online radio station last summer, Darren took an intrest (to the point of adding me on MSN to ask me about it), the only problem we had was Angela was concerned that it wouldn't be good for the forums reputation/where it stood legally (talking about my "illegal" radio station that is).

But, as "cool" an idea as it is....would anyone actually listen to it? I don't think I would (in honesty) unless there were very interesting shows (i.e. more than one person talking, and not constant music that I can't choose, or skip etc.

well i know another forum has radio and i can tell you from personal experience and looking at the stats peak listeners never got above 15 (other than a few of the live show broadcasts) and all the listeners were forum members rather than a wider audience.. (again excluding show broadcasts)....

SO it's a lot of hassle and expense for the amount of listeners really.

i think if people want to have a forum radio station then the members should have to pay for it. i like the forum the way it is. its helped me out but to be honest i would prefer to listen to my own music at the same time a typing on here.

I completely agree.

It's notoriously hard to get listeners for internet radio stations...double figures & you're doing extremely well!

A couple of my friends worked on / ran stations and had the same problem...even though they were streaming at very good quality & running 24 hours a day ("auto DJ" selected the music through the night).

Unlike terrestrial radio, people can't listen in their car & usually can't listen in different rooms around their house...so it's not very portable.

Also, if someone is sitting at a computer, you are competing against their CD drive as well as thousands of OTHER internet radio stations!

I used to record short comedy sketches for a friend's show on one such station, as it didn't take much time, but when I was offered my own show I declined, as I didn't think the time, work & effort was worth it just to get about 6 listeners, most of who were my friends anyway.

I ran an internet station earlier this year for another forum, although at the time i wasn't aware they hadn't got the proper licenses (my own fault for just believing them) anyway managed to get about 90/120 listeners on average many of whom were forum members, but a few who found us through the server (spacial audio) anyways, once i found out the license hadn't been purchased i dumped it and as a result they ended up shutting the station, but although yes its expensive, its also very much fun.

I suppose it all depends on who it's aimed at. I see little point in a station only aimed at forum members. But people like Bazza who have specific shows for a nieche market then it could be worth it.

I suppose it also depends if you enjoy doing it.
