I was handed a cutting from the paper today...not sure which....Times i think...see what you think.


Digital kills the wedding DJ…you’ll be sorry.

It saw off the vinyl record and the video cassette. Now digital technology is squaring up to kill off another great cultural institution – the wedding DJ.
Modern couples are tiring of the traditional cheesy disc jockey, invariably called Gaz, who, via his tinny sound system bedecked with flashing lights, has guests gyrating painfully to Hi Ho Silver Lining, and instead are using their iPods to provide cooler music for the ''night do''.

Weary, perhaps, of the inevitability of The Lady In Red and the entire back catalogue of Phil Collins, they are compiling their own playlists on their MP3’s and attaching them to speakers. In the past year more than two thirds of couples who held their reception at Manchester’s posh Lowry Hotel opted to hang the DJ – and the trend for DIY disco is growing nationwide.

Oh, it’s easy to sneer at the average middle-aged Smashy and Nicey with his c r a p hair, too-tight jeans and dire record collection. But be warned. Other people’s weddings can be tedious affairs and without the endless humour that can be derived from the DJ using The Birdie Song to force all relatives on the dancefloor – ''that includes you, Gran! I bet you were a right goer in your day'' – things maybe come very dull indeed.

My favourite moment at a wedding is at 8pm when the DJ announces ''the buffet’s open!'' and uncles and aunties stampede across the room to fill paper plates with sweating sausage rolls. Forty minutes later he livens things up a bit ''with a trip back to the Eighties'' and on comes The Lion Sleeps Tonight by Tight Fit, to which people must shuffle with full stomaches.

Yes mock all you like but, mark my words, you’ll miss him when he’s gone.

8 pm when the dj announces the buffet i dont think hes been to many discos as buffet is usually 9pm and d i y discos wouldnt create an atomsphere like us djs do.
try and find out where u read it and his name and i will send him a letter telling him what i think of him and that he hasnt got a clue

Interesting reading, but for anyone to suggest that digital technology is squaring up to kill off the wedding DJ is incredibly naive.

Every year, I get more bookings than the previous year...90% of which are for weddings, and I've never had an enquiry or request about using an ipod.

I can only speak for my own business in my area of the country, but in my opinion anyone who suggests that technology is killing off the wedding DJ really needs to wake up & get into the REAL world.

Exactly, and the same applies to a mobile disco website. It is such an easy thing to get right, which goes a long way towards projecting the professional image that you need to acquire bookings.

On the subject of ipod weddings, my client last weekend said how glad he was he booked us rather than listening to his partner and getting an ipod with rented P.A . End of the night bride came up and said exactly same thing blaming partney for wanting an ipod DJ.
Just goes to show people think its a good idea untill they actually think it through. Hiring lighting setting it up, p.a setup, announcements. You try calling people to a first dance on an ipod.

I had a look around a few hire companies that rent out various different types of equipment. To hire my usual setup for 1 night would cost around £300 not including the music. I perform with music for only £220, LESS than the hire cost of same equipment. Go figure

And I know people who go out with a lot more gear than me for less money.

Interestingly I have taken a Wedding for next year where im doing my Ultimate Country Show with instructed dancing etc and I have agreed they can play their ipod through the PA free of charge.

I know most of the people who have responded from other forums and the industry in general and yes, I too wish they had used a spellchecker etc

Until the industry comes together and generally becomes more professional, these people will carry on writing stuff like this.

My wife went to Germany a few weeks ago to a wedding......i went with Dragonfly to a prom....I had more fun!!:D

At the wedding the DJ never showed.....they must have the same thing for cheepos out there.

An iPod / laptop were lashed together and guess what...the dance floor was empty.....until the MD got hold of the laptop and found YMCA / Cha, Cha Slide......cheesy i know but who got most people up....my MD.:D :D

They didn't even have the Hoff.......:eek:

Not to forget "we are DJ's" Not English teachers...

My Brother in law can strip an engine down and rebuild it without thinking about it! (Trust him more than a main dealer) Put a pen to paper, cant write his name.

Just because you cant spell doesn't mean you cant express your opinion as a Proffesional DJ...

i think digital is the way to go. yes vinyl had its days and so did cd's (still used today) but with digital its much easier to select songs and mix and all that. Also saves having hundred of cd's (which if they brake or explode in the drive, you cant replace them if they were a one off or LTD edition ect)
