i recently bought a second laptop (intel centrino pentium m 1.7 mhz) as a back up for the main laptop (dell inspiron dual core)

i formatted the back up laptop and installed my dj software/souncard drivers etc. but when i play back the mp3's i get this terrible clicking/humming noise from the laptop every couple of seconds, i've read a little bit about it on the internet and it sounds like i may have a ground loop problem. i concluded this because when i unplug the mains from the laptop and run on battery power the noise goes away.

so do you think that this is what the problem will be? or could it possibly be something more sinister?

if a ground loop isolator would solve the problem, could someone recommend one that will be up to the job?

You will need a ground loop, Maplin sell them.

Just get a cheap one - they all work as well as each other.

I've bought them from Maplins at £7.99 each and from Ebay for £25 each and they are pretty much the same.

I had this recently and changed the laptop's PSU. Cured. Luckily I had a box full of compatible PSUs kicking around the house otherwise this could be an expensive solution.

"Faulty" PSU was a Dell PA-90 if that helps anyone.

yes its a ground loop problem. most djs with laptops will of been there at some point!

Just get one of the mid range units of ebay... here for example -

what about 2x DI Boxes. Then you can increase the signal if need be as well as get rid of the hum.

£8.99 from M*plins. I had exactly the same problem - now cured.
