Class D, any good?

Iv been looking about and come about these. There a pair or class d subs with amp and cables. Just wanted to know if there power rating was true and if there actually good. If they are then i might join the class d band wagon

I think that product R & D is ahead of the website! HOWEVER, your best bet is to ring the company with your requirements, and see what they say. They do not bump up power outputs, but just watch for impedance, they are usually 8ohms, not 4, so power falls correspondingly. This is more speakers than you may wish, but excellent value.

As far as I know, none of us who have bought Class-D have any misgivings, yes they are budget, but they do exactly what it says on the tin!

If you could get to see/hear them in person, so much the better!

right. the first link you gave me, i have heard these speaker, well tonight. i went to my brothers band gig in ramsgate and to be honest i didnt like them at all. there not the exact same but still.

it might of been the sound engineer ( who did a crap job) but not to keen on them. plus i have to fit them in my car dont forget (as well as all the other dj gear).

i dont have a van just yet. lol. also i wanted expand them so i can do band hire and all that. as i did that college i might as well use it. hmmm. there is a link below of the pa setup

I have just had a look at those c-mark amps and they are 650 rms at 8 ohm. so they match the subs nicley. so i guess the amps will be ok then.

You won't get those amps from them. It's a long story, so I won't do it. If you get them elsewhere, check guarantee, as there was a problem with a batch ( mine's OK as far as I can see, lovely amp) . Best bet, as I always say, is RING THEM, they are great folk, no bull on the phone, and if they can help they will. The subs you want ( unless you fancy 18" ) are CD15P, not the compacts which I have. Good luck, keep us informed.

I know everyone will have their own opinion, and especially on this forum there is a large group of people who swear by class D and a large group who would consider them bad quality or budget.

My only issue is that i would seriously consider buying a set of tops and bass speakers but the price puts me off. If i was dead certain that they stood up to the competitors at that end of the market (eg Wharfedale Peavey etc) then i would be extremely happy as the set would only be a few hundred pounds new. But the fact that they are so cheap (as brilliant as it would be if they were the real thing) puts me off.

I say this every time, but try to get to hear them. They ARE budget, but not cheap( in the quality sense) None of us who use them pretend they are competitors for ,say, EVL or JBL. However, when we run our systems against name brands, like my big Class-D system with one amp against a band with a two amp Peavey system, the Class-D never seems to sound worse.
If we all had funds, I'm sure we would run top name systems, but as in many cases money is tight, value is paramount.
I can honestly say I have no regrets about any Class-D gear I have bought.
If you want higher end, there appears to be a set of tops with compression drivers out now, look interesting.

I own a set of class-d cd15n bass bins and a set of cd158 top cabs. I run the whole system from a kam kxr 1500w amplifier and i find this system immense. Cheap, Yes, Quality, Very close to as good as Carlsbro etc. Each speaker gets 375 watts @ 4 ohms when all connected and for smaller gigs the top cabs get 425 watts @ 8 ohms and they can take some serious licking.. Overall, Class-d is the dogs :Censored: ....:)

Agreed! Bear in mind that if you are using the built in crossovers though, you are still at 8ohms. It's only 4ohms if you run in parallel with the tops.

In our experience...the in-line (passive) crossovers in the Class D subs are terrible. I think we've blown two up, completely randomly.

Now our subs run from a seperate amp with an active crossover in front of the amp. We run the amp bridged, and subs in parallel, giving us considerably more power. The bins, are very good for the price.

Now that I do agree with. As a test, I set mine up with passive crossovers used, and initially thought I had wasted my money on the active crossover I ahd bought. That was until I set it back up with active crossover and two amps. What a difference!:)

DAP look good for there money and the specs are good but there a little pricy (for me at the moment). i was thinking of going for a tri-amp setup??? :S

It all depends on where you're setting your sights.

If you are going to be doing the PA for mates, pub bands, etc, and are on the sort of budget that would usually come with that, then you could do a lot worse than the names you've listed above.

However you do say you want to "really go for it" in the PA hire business. In that case, think more about buying branded boxes that would be rider friendly. Also look to buy boxes that will have a purpose as you expand to bigger & better things, for example you may start out with a small FOH rig, but those boxes could be deployed on monitor duties in a larger setup a few years down the line.

Appreciate the budget price ticket on that rig, but for my £2k I'd look for some secondhand boxes with much greater efficiency that would give you the same SPLs without carting TEN boxes around. IMHO.

It might have to be very secondhand. Lets say Peavey 4XT/215H for top, and 215S for sub. New price on those is £3500. Then the amps, as well. I actually ran my Class-D gear against that very system, and it sounded at least as good, if quieter, as I was one amp down on theirs. Same number of boxes in my case.

You could get less boxes, but each would probably be bigger and heavier. The physical difference between that system, and the Class-D is basically the four JAC plastics, not all that much perhaps. Plus, of course, the Class-D
would split into two rigs of around 2Kw each. In many ways, a six and two threes. Good for thought.
