I have voted for other, as sometimes we use a plain black flat I made, of 3m x 1 (basically a piece of black cloth mounted over a wooden frame), or sometimes a 3m x 2m starcloth folded over the flat.

So there's options for both of what you use and you put other....? :p

Not ever seen anyone.
I am also considering buying one (again) Will - I did get some prices a while back and they were better if more people bought them.
I'm using a rhinestone-covered black cloth which I bought from Dunelm mill shop. It has the 'twinkly' effect when my lights hit it.

Just got home from work & seen this poll.
I've voted for other, as I use a home-made affair consisting of 3 bits of MDF hinged together & covered in black carpet cloth. The sides fold out & the whole thing covers my deck stand, 4 way power block & most of the leads.
The best thing about it.....it's NOT a starcloth or a lightscreen!

"Retro" is a polite word for "old-fashioned" (in the same way that "cuddly" is a polite word for "fat").
If you think retro works best, does this mean you use spot boxes, light screens, fuzzlights and ropelights?

Or maybe its because they think it looks better than an outdated light screen? Rather than putting all of us that use star cloths in a very stereotypical category of "snobs", maybe you could spend some time thinking about what you say.

I hate to say it, and without wanting to be rude...that's a really stupid comment. I personally don't DMX my star cloth, I think it's a waste of time, when at the end of the day it's a static light (almost). I don't really want my cloth flashing, and I'd like to know how you would go about matching it with your other lights?
Both your comments are uninformed statements, and have annoyed me somewhat! *Goes away to a corner and screams*

The fact is, the guys with the starcloth booths have them for a reason and the reason is because there is a certain standard for the higher paid jobs and like it or not, this standard does not include light screens.
It's nothing to do with being snotty. If you are happy with village hall type functions and average pay, then fine. If however you want to work in top Hotels doing top end and corporate work and earning bigger money, you will find a booth useful.

That is true, but if I could comment on your average disco - like a 21st or 50th birthday party, I've actually arrived at the conclusion that you really don't need much in the way of lights at all. Personally, I always use at least 4 linked effects, and a plain black cloth for frontage. In my opinion, I get a good presentation and lightshow this way, and better than all the competition around my way (including the so called 'multi-op' companies).
A well known company from nearby always use 'traffic lights' and a tacky (IMO) company sign for their frontage, with one or two moonflowers pointing at the roof. They are successful though, as people generally don't care, so long as the tunes are decent, and keep coming.
What's my point? Well, I think that for your average booking, possibly including some weddings, lightboxes and retro 'flashing bulb type thingys' as a frontage seem to be very acceptable, and sometimes I think it's just us DJs who can't accept them?

I think you're partly right, but the DJs who don't want to accept them want this industry to move past the stage that we were at 20 odd years ago in the way that we look and are percieved by the general public.

I agree, beerfunk.
I only use 8 pinspots & a couple of basic lighting effects...
...partly because more, better, newer or more expensive lights would make no difference to clients, and partly because I'm happy finishing at midnight, and packing down & being ready to leave the venue by 12.30am.
This wouldn't be possible if I had loads of effects & trussing etc.

Well I'm not one of those DJs, but I do wonder why I go to all that effort putting up relatively impressive lighting effects, and linking them together etc, when other companies and DJs are spending what must be ten minutes chucking a few bulbs and moonflowers down, and the average punter doesn't seem to notice the difference? Maybe, if I think of it as business, I should do the same? But then I always think, surely some of them notice (and appreciate) the difference.

Don't get me wrong - I have never sold my business on the gear. I sell a service, but it's the overall picture that I look at. If I can get every part absolutely right, then I can move forward in the publics perception and also in the money stakes.

Is the sign itself tacky, or do you find signs tacky in general? Just wondering, as I was planning to use one that my friend (signmaker -vinyl graphics) has done for me. I'm just setting up and I was planning 'initially' to use a sign on the frontage to help me get established.
You say the other company is successful, so it wouldn't appear to be a put-off for punters, but what do others on the forum think. Will it harm me in a business sense, or is it like many other things, just a personal choice?

I voted Starcloth Booth as I have purchased one and am just waiting for it to arrive (plus I purchased Ricesnaps frontage as well that he had on eBay - Mix and match!) but I have to just say to Key2's question that I personally hate signs....
At charity doos and possibly 18ths/21sts fine - but if doing a wedding or some other fancy affair, don't - Ever -
There is a guy that I used to pass work onto, but he constantly used a rig with all his details on the front - Now I only give him birthdays, nothing else (like anniversaries, weddings etc) as he just looks tacky to me....

I do mostly weddings, and a few months back I was seriously considering a nice sign to go on my frontage, so I did a thread asking for opinions.
At least 90% of people said NO to signs for weddings.
Needless to say, I scrapped the plan!

They use a piece of cardboard with everything printed onto it (logo, email, telephone, fax etc), the print quality is decent, but it's obvious that it's a piece of cardboard, and they just lean it against a flightcase.

They are successful, although I suspect that's it's at least partly down to lack of competition. I don't think their presentation has a bearing on their business, as the customers seem to be happy with it. The number one complaint I've heard from customers of other discos when I've asked, is about the music that was played - if you get that right you're halfway there.

Put the claws away??? I like both looks but dare I quote NO Market for the boothed look around here. Sorry people round here want to pack up quick on the night end, with a booth that option is impossible. I already take 45 minutes to set up and another 45 mins to pack away with a booth Im looking at it taking 1hr +
There is no std look for a disco what is one mans dmx lighting disco look good to another mans is trafic lights....Fact most customers come to be entertained by the music not the lighting
I mix the best of all worlds having Laser lighting and LED lighting as well as retro frontage eventually I will have a Booth but fear it will get little usage so DMX lighting will be next. I would rather have a DMX star cloth behind me hanging from the goalposts than a booth and I will still get paid a higher price than most boothed events. Every venue changes to the needs of a set up

In 5 years time, you will still be moaning about something, whilst I will have moved on. I am stating the obvious about the looks of shows with starcloth booth being the more corporate money earner.
You have obviously never used or seen one because they take less than 5 minutes to set up. You fold them down and fold the cloth up. End of story.
Why are you always stating facts about the market which you obviously know nothing about? Ricesnaps is near you isn't he and he seems to be moving onto the kind of market that pays well. How can you say there's no market for the booth effect? How do you know?
And er...fact, all customers come to be entertained by the music not lights. I know that, but if you go for certain looks, then you can sell yourself to certain markets.

A. Im not really looking at doing corporate events. The private functions can be a financially more worth while for me
B. I have seen Booths with or without starcloths some with just cloths, all are a pain to pack away unless you have an easy fold up booth which are very costly most are a pain in the butt...
C. I aint moaning Im making a comment this is what the site is about and If Imn still within the industry in 5 years time then I will still be making my own points of view
D. Ricey lives over 60 miles from my local Market, I have great respect for him. I get as well paid for bookings as he does... I just know my immediate local area and this is what Im basing my accurate information on. I know all my rivals personnally and we all try to help each other. bar maybe 1 whom we know would just do anything to cut our throuts or undermine the rest of us this is called jealousy I believe but we all stick together in general. The only booth business works 95% out of town and his main industry is a bouncy castle, casino hire & close up magician act now. Disco wise he is flopping through his arrogance and attitude...like most with booths around here

My nearest rival hires me as a guest DJ when Im quiet for a local public house, the word flies fast when people know Im working there that weekend its rammed full???.. Just one of those things I suppose Im tempted to get back on club scene again sometimes. Entertaining 1500 + people has its appeal

without trying to take the topic off thread totally i just thought i would add to the equation...... most know that iam constantly trying to creep my prices up .......
6-8 months ago when I was quoting I was getting "hooooooow much!!!!" comments as people thought I was expensive however I stuck with it as I always do had a hugely busy June and July at those prices and now ......
the last four people to book me have all said my quote was about in the middle for all the discos they had called....
now either all the other discos in my area have rocketed their prices ?? which I doubt or .......
I am now getting calls from people who are looking for a different type of disco/service?? who are willing to pay for what im offering because they care what they are buying and I care what they are buying too.
incidentally the last 3 people to book have all commented among other things that they were impressed that I had thought about my new lighting show and not blinding little johnny in the pushchair or granny with her ear pressed up against the speaker???
no one even used to mention lights to me , but as said the last 3 people have all passed comment.
maybe im just being lucky for once and i apologise to admin immensely for going off topic but i just thought it was a point worth making.

I have run 6 disco's for a well known DJ in Newmarket for 6 years when I started successfully???? I know how much to put out for a night, a light show means jack its about the musical compentacy of the DJ that makes a night not a light show. a light show means jack its about the musical compentacy of the DJ that makes a night not a light show
For general parties / weddings, probrably yes. However, a good percentage of our work is based on quality of equipment AS WELL AS the actual DJ. The bigger clients look for something extra special.

My frontage is basically a black carpeted MDF affair with sides (hinged) and with a cut-out in the front for a 17" TFT monitor. It's a far cry from the black sheet I used to use years ago!

Whoaa...that's exactly what I use! (apart from the cut out for the tv).

Plus, if you do a good job, it gives you a nice sense of pride.

Can I join the club?!
I too have an MDF built stand / frontage.
I built it around 4 years ago, 3 bits of MDF, LOTS of hinges, and is put up in around 5 seconds..
Theres 4 holes in the top to take my wheeled flightcase, and lighting controller case and thats it....
You can see a picture of it on another thread regarding starcloth.
I`m having another one built by a mate of mine in the coming weeks so will post a photo once its done....
Thumbs up to MDF and a bit of black gloss!:)
