Hi all,
thought i'd share this one with you.
Last nights wedding was at a local hotel, at the end of the night with only 15 mins to go, dance floor full, a guy comes over to me (drunk) and says:-
him -I use to be a DJ
me -did you really, and how long ago?
him -in the 90S. I had all this gear, i had those lights on that frame ( pointing at the moving heads on a goal post stand) and i had one of them things there:confused:
me-Oh yes i would nt be without it (well he started it:) i had no idea what he was looking at)
Then just as he's walking off he says "oi play that one by living joy"
me-which ones that?
him-YOU F:Censored: KNOW, GET IT ON
me-  :quiet:
With under 5 mins to go, dance floor full, bride asks for aqua- barbie girl (shes dancing with the bridesmaids)
Half way through this the drunk comes back and says:-
ENOUGH OF THE KIDDIE C:Censored: P GET SOME GOOD MUSIC ON NOOOOOOW:eek:
(This function room has no bar in it, there is a bar/lounge at the end of the corridor)
so i called him over and said, i like living joy as well, however you need to fill out a request form for me to play it, you can get the forms complete with pen from the bar.
(thinking once at the bar he'll forget about the song ang just buy a drink ha ha)
must have worked didnt see him again:D :D :D :D

I had one last night who was dancingg very close to my gear and bumped into it a couple of times before falling over my sub and sitting on it...
I politely suggested he dance away from the equipment for his 'safety' (Read into that what you will;) )

Like previous threads on this nightmare scenario, the "I am" or "I used to be" a dj types, invariably are drunk, incapable of stringing a sentence together and have the worst taste in music ever for that particular function, libertines at a 60th, oh i think not, but Mika went down a storm........!!!.

if i was in your shoes i would'nt know what to do. would be kind of scared in a way. having all this equipment and just me on my own. i have never been in any sticky situation at all so i would just bottle it and play the song right at the very end. :(

I've quite often played otherwise inappropriate requests at low volume after we've finished and are packing up the lights. I always play SOMETHING quietly for 5-10 mins after finishing as I find it tends to leave the clientele in a calmer state of mind for some reason. If there are no "hangover requests" I'll pop on a longish song like 'won't get fooled again' or 'stairway to heaven' or similar.
Just a habit I've gotten into.

I would like to do that, but what about licensing times? If, for example, I was booked till 1AM - I cannot by law play any music after 1, regardless of volume. If I was booked till half 12, then I would get away with that, but that never seems to happen.

I was wondering the same thing.
If I'm booked until midnight, I have to finish at midnight...and never over-run by more than a minute.
If I was still playing at 12.10, there are many venues where I know I'd have officials coming up, moaning at me & asking me to turn it off.
Also, they'd hardly be likely to recommend me to future clients!

Its always a sticky one the "I am a DJ" or "I used to be a DJ" customer and generally i don't give a monkeys and just play as normal. But when they make a fool of themselves claiming to be a DJ past or present i always reply with the following "but you are not working now are you so (insert your own expletive) off!!" :)

The best thing about when you used to be a DJ is that there's no heavy gear to hump about!

Good point. No-ones ever bothered me about that, not even in the local con clubs etc. where they're really anal about the rulebook.
Guess that as it's low volume and the house lights are on it's obvious the DJs not over-running so they let it go.
