Long shot, but you never know!

My S Reg Vito is going in for it's MOT on Thursday. Have had a problem with the headlights for a few weeks now, so thought I would take a look as non-working headlights will obviously mean MOT fail!

My much more knowledgable neighbour came to lend a hand.

Seems I have side ligghts, dipped, but no main beam. Dipped is brighter on the drivers side. There was also a thin white wire coming from one of the live's on the drivers side's main lamp to the same spade on the passengers. Looked very dodgy and we removed it. Managed to get back to the same place we were at, but no full beam and still a little dimmer on one side. Neighbour got the meter out and it seems I only have about 7 volts getting to each of the main beam lamps.

Now, he seemed to think it might be a relay problem, but where on earth are the relays in the vito? Found both the fuse boxes, but not the relays!

Now it's a long shot, but worth asking if one of you guys has any ideas?

Otherwise, I might be trying to squeeze Saturday night's rig into the wife's Partner!

The answer is, phone an auto electrician/mechanic etc, pay a few quid, but get the job done properly.

I would have thought headlamps were fairly important.

Try under the bonnet on the right hand side near the battery. relays for lights are normally very heavy duty so should be near the main power fuse box. (if fitted, some vehicles dont have a relay) The most likely fault is a negative earth bond failure. Or water in the relay if it has one.
Unfortunatly wiring on vehicles can be a big problem. When I had a ford car I was always rewiring the cabling due to rust and cable break down.
Simplist way is to follow cable paths to try to find all possible problem points.

And whats wrong with a partner lol I use one great cars.

Main beam isn't required to pass MOT AFAIK. Ring your local centre to find out
As long as your dipped are aligned you should be ok.

MOT states that all lights fitted to a vehicle must be in a servicable and working condition.
But as with most things coves down the examiner

It does depend on how vigilant the examiner is, i had a vehicle pass once which had a blown braking light which i had known about for a week before it went in.

Sounds like a bad earth somewhere, that normally causes problems like that, try running two wires one from battery one from earth direct to bulb, see if that works.
Also look on a Vito forum for better help

Exactly, now if you wanted something a bit better, like say entertaining for example, then I'd probably go for a professional, just like I have with the van! :p

Challenge now is to find somewhere I can download the electric plan as the garage doing MOT can't tell which relay is which (although at least they found them!)
