I've just got this through on a free listing via e-mail....

Tony, good news! You have received an enquiry via UK-Disco.

If you would like to follow-up this enquiry, simply text the following message (without the quotes) to our SMS number : 88222.

'DISCO xxxx'

Your mobile operator will charge £1.50 to your bill. The full enquiry, including the client's contact details will then be available through your admin menu on UK-Disco.

Two questions -
1) Is this the norm?
2) How does this make it a free listing?

What they are now doing is giving you the opportunity to buy access to an enquiry to another free listing - a golden opportunity to obtain business using your telephone selling skills, or alternatively the opportunity to speak to someone whose opening gambit is "How much my saan!" You pays your money and indeed you takes yer chance!

I was offered a free trial from another similar company---got two enquiries--no telephone numbers--just email--no business:(

I am listed on UK disco and the text facility wasn't even on there to begin with. If people now don't want to answer and pay £1.50 out of principle, the prospective client might think you haven't bothered to answer. That's the bit that would annoy me.

Or, upgrade to a paid listing if you think you'll be interested in more 20 odd leads per year. (Silver listing is £35)

Of course, clients can still come through to your site and enquire direct.. so you can still get these ones for free!

Obviously I don't know the details, but there does seem to be a huge amount of free listings on there, it might be that the site was no longer viable with the amount of paid listers there currently are.

But at the end of the day, its a business and there to make money. You've probably noticed they have several other sites for photographers, limos etc.

If for each £1.50 on a lead, you secure a £200+ booking, then its less than 1% of turnover. I suppose its just down to how likely you think the conversion is - there does seem to be quite alot of "how much?" type enquiries.

My experience of being given the free trial leads was rubbish---but as Soundtracker pointed out---if you got telephone Numbers then theres more chance of using your telephone selling skills--

Usually I find most internet enquiries give email addresses and dont want to be contacted by phone to start with.

So its very hit and miss-I know the bloke who phoned me about the free trial quoted a success rate of about 1 in 6 I think--it would be fairly low because they give the lead to other people.

I cant see it being much more effective than your own site--unless you dont get many enquiries.

but that's the thing Darren you still get your free listing! You're still on the site and you're names still out there.... so you are still getting you free listing... It's just if you want it to be useful to your business you have to pay...

One thing i do know and that's UK-disco has paid for itself time and time again! I've already covered the cost of the gold listing many times over.

Plus i think charging per enquiry for the free listings is great... well for me personally anyway as i have a gold listing which means any enquiry that someone makes to a free listing it's available for me to view too :D as most tick the 3rd party box... So if more of the free listings dont pay to view it it's one less disco to compete against my quote.

Having said that for some reason my listing isn't even on the site at the moment and only renewed a few months ago... Off to go write and email!!!!

I have a Silver listing and it has more than paid for itself. I get about 10 enquiries a month through the site and the booking ratio is about 1 in 5 (some I don't reply to if they have been sent to others and not the sort of thing I want to do). Most do have a phone number but it is up to the enquirer whether or not they include one.

Well, apart from on here UK disco is the only place I advertise. I have a gold listing (£94 a yr). It worked really well over in Northern Ireland and seems to be going ok overhere as a gold member (sorry ,couldnt resist that!) I get all enquires for the E Mids region via text. So far I ve got a 2 bookings from every 10 enquirys success rate , yes not brilliant but ok at the mo while im trying to establish myself overhere. I bought a 100 text bundle for I think £30 off the top of my head.

So i'd say people are still using their site.


Still hanging onto the hope that my Ad in decembers brides magazine will sow up next year.
