If you mean safer in terms of viruses, that is apparently true but if your PC is not exposed to and danger (ie. connected to the net, other machines etc) and is a dedicated machine - it is 100% safe!

I don't think it would "properly" if at all. I also would have thought Microsoft would have built something in to their software installation that says "Erm...no...you're using a Mac, go and spend another £150 here for the Mac version" ;).

Macs and PCs use completetly different folder structures, not to mention a completetly different file system. I can't think it would be possible.

Not that I actually know much about Macs....

hmm was going to say if you stick with the pc there is free software called KraMixer. It might look a bit crap but i used to use this and never had a problem if you dont want to spend money.

I only think macs are for photoshop and video editing really.

I'll re-iterate my original post which I think highlights the key point here - why would you go the hassle and expense of using a Mac over a PC?

i agree but my cheap £440 packard bell laptop starts up in aobut 60 seconds. and thats from pressing the power button to loading the program. im happy with that. plus would you want to spend about £700 for a mac when a cheap laptop like mine will do the same job???

To a degree. I'm not sure why Callum is even going on about them TBH, unless he's feeling lucky for Christmas....

Callum (BeerFunk) is right, just don't plug your PC into any internet. I do plug my machine into my network, as I don't particually want to type out entire CDs worth of ID3 tags....although I have a very restrictive firewall set both on the PC (which is automatic, but I shut off when I'm not plugged into the network [saves resources at gigs]) and on my home network.

I have never, EVER, EVER had my PC die on me, and I use it 2 or 3 times a week in a live situation. It's not even that great a spec, 2.2Ghz, Gig of ram...that's nothing these days.

The problems will arise, Callum, if you install MSN, Skype etc, and read your email on the PC, randomly browse the internet. These are the threats to your DJ PC.

Other programs also can affect its performance, but I quite easily run WYG and AutoCad for my Lighting designs (as Vista, my main PC, doesn't like).

I suggest you continue as you are with your PC, until it gives you a reason not to continue with it.

All new macs have intel chips and are capable of dual boot so can run mac osx, windows XP or vista so software isnt a problem whatsover.

Native mac dj programs are Traktor DJ Studio, Traktor Scratch, Serato Scratch, Ableton Live and Virtual DJ, so plenty to choose from

There are loads of factors to take into consideration when working out why something is "slow" booting/logging on.

We lock down our students very tightly indeed, this means the logon time is rather long. All the group policy settings have to be sucked off the domain controllers, onto the clients everytime. It may take a while, but we don't half run a tight ship.

If some machines are slower than others, then obviously age is a factor. Spec (mainly RAM and CPU speeds [note: laptops tend to have lower spec CPUs than desktop machines]), wireless as you've already said, and the general connection to the central switch. Also how ever many people are booting up PCs or logging on at the same time is something to consider. As domain policies are sucked from the network, when you boot a machine, and group policies when you log in (as I've said).

In conclusion: You can't rate a laptop's spec by it's price. I'm wondering why your school bought a laptop for a grand to be honest. It must be over-spec'd, or a complete rip off. We have 84 laptops across our school (for student loan, they come and collect for a lesson, and take them back to their classroom [entire school has wireless, WAP in every room]), these laptops were about £350. Made by Toshiba, 1GB ram 1.8 - 2Ghz CPU, Centrino, 15.4" Screen.

If the laptop isn't of that greater spec, I'd suggest to your school that they look a little harder before making any more I.T. purchases.  :D

Also, have a look at your list of things starting up when you boot the PC. Click on start - run - msconfig - start up and have a look at all the things starting up when you boot up. Most of them are un-necessary and slow your PC right down.

When you say network, what are we talking here. A domain? or Workgroup?

I've never used a Mac with a Windows domain before.

RM stuff is expensive, but they build it for schools. Can't see them being so expensive that they cost a grand each....unless your adding every single add-on and frill to them.

You might get better spec'd machines....but they wouldn't be portable, which is exactly why laptops are more expensive in the first place.

That can't be right. I doubt it very much the council tell you what to buy. One man decides what we're going to buy at my school. The I.T. Manager. He may discuss it with us, his fellow technicians, but he has the decision. Not even the head says "this one".

I'd check your facts Callum, because that doesn't sound right at all mate.

well when i was at school there was only RM computer but now they still have RM computers but with dual core and all that stuff.

They have mac's but only in the creative suit. They got 24x G5 and everything on them but thats only for art students and anyone that needs them for that power. mplus 2 teachers have to be in the room even if one kid was in there. rules are rules they say

But as far as all the other laptops ans pc in school there are all running microsoft and never have a problem. plus iv heard that thay have been given a licence for 300 computers for vista. its costing them so much ££££££££ but the school has been given a new status so they get an extra £5,000,000 a year.

we don't have a IT manager in the school only a tech (Useless tho! its taken him over 4 months to replace one of the teacher's PCs He keeps "forgetting" to get one.) everything is controlled from the Scottish Borders Council HQ 60 miles away!! Its abit like a big network!!

It's called a WAN (Wide Area Network) we are connected to one, and have a 10mb up, 10mb down connection to the county, who provide our internet, for a mere £4,000 a year. They try to control us, but we have rebelled against it, and now only use their Internet.

We over took their email system with Exchange 2007 this summer, I think we're one of the best schools in our area in terms of I.T. with a 200k anual budget, 25 servers. Full Citrix metaframe and now Exchange 2007. We're soon to move our phone system completely over to Voice over IP.

I'm really suprised that you only have one tech for an entire secondary school. We have 6 including myself.

It's called the Schools Licensing Agreement. We spend about £30k a year on it. Basically entitles us to run endless copies of most Microsoft software, and because you then become a volume license user, you get everything prior release. We're also licensed to give staff copies of Office, XP and Vista. Hence how I had a copy of Vista and Office 2007 6 months prior to it being launched in the UK :D
