View Full Version : HK Audio - interesting - Eminence Drivers?

Thought i'd pass this on for comments.

One of my DJ's has an HK Lucase system cost him about £2000. He had a problem on both bass cabinets within a week of each other.

Basically the post that holds the driver terminals fell apart. He took them back to the dealer and was told that HK used Eminence drivers...surely that cant be true.

He's getting them repaired under warranty so ok.

My point is I was considering buying the HK Actor costing approx £3800 quite a lot of money.

Yes they sound awesome but.....will I pay for a set of speakers at that price that use Eminence drivers...hell no!!!

Comments please from anyone who knows more about HK would be appreciated.

Yes HK Audio do use Eminence drivers that is correct. I have a lucas system myself as well as having mackie & RCF and ive never had any problems at all with it.

The HK Audio stuff sounds great. The only speakers from what ive noticed that use eminence in the HK stuff is the bass drivers. The high & mid is made by HK Audio as i looked.

Put them all together you got a brilliant sounding system

Still a bit of an ouch using the same driver that maplin puts in its prosound range for that price lol.

Nothing really wrong with Eminence if you don't push your system too hard. One of the main reasons that drivers from companies like PD are more popular is their ability to survive under heavy loads. Obviously with the HK systems, you don't have that issue, as all cabinets are monitored by limiters.

Not surprised HK dont advertise the fact they use Eminence drivers though, bet they wouldnt have sold half the systems they have. It's certainly put me right off.

That sort of money I expect PD quality drivers regardless of limiters not £50 bass drivers

Surely you are paying for sound quality and reliability above all else? Even if they are making a considerable markup on their products, it's nothing compared to certain clothing/footware designers and retailers.

Are you sure they are using the exact same drivers that Maplin sell?
It is possible that Eminence make a "Pro" range and a budget range, like many manufacturers do.
Besides, if they work, sound good and do not compromise the quality and reliability you expect from the HK gear (don't know them myself..) then does it really matter???
It could be that the particular driver just happens to be an outstanding performer for a budget price, it does happen occasionally ;-)

Think you will find Eminence make a range of 15" bass drivers retailing from £45 up to £135 (http://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=eminence+15)

They use Carlsbro drivers.

i Have 4 HK LR118 18" bass bins and 4 HK LR112 tops here and havent a clue what drivers they actually have in them... But to be honnest i really don't care....

All i care about is that they sound great and are reliable.... surly that's the main thing.

I had 4 Turbosound tms4's when they first come out and they had fane drivers in them think they were about £1200 a cab at the time and although they used PD's up untill recently, they were still using fane compression driver's up untill fane went under a few months ago!

But I have to admit they sounded good!

Well you all rave about Mackie they use a cheaper driver than eminence costs pennies to make in China but they sound fine , its all down to the cab design

Pennies?? That's interesting, where did you get that information?

Just a term of phrase ie very cheap you would be amazed how many high end speaker manufactures have there drivers made in ROC like ma.... and rcf are put together in India ,but they all sound fine as these people spend a lot of dough on cabinet design.
