I'm confused now...

Sorry if this has been covered....but i have looked at some threads and i think it has a different view.....:)

After looking at HTFR - Cortex, Numark and Denon - thanks to Adam.
I have been looking in our local gear shops....all of 2!!:p
These were both pushng the Cortex HDC-3000.....both shop's had no Denon DN-HD2500 or showed any intention of getting one in.....strange.

I've decided on the Denon DN-HD2500....for the following reasons -
1) The works coming in so i feel the need to go digital...stop lumping those cases around.
2) The display is pleasing to the eye - not a bright light...numark has the same sort of display....greyish.
3) Internal hard drive.
4) Buttons seem to be easy to operate.
5) Dont need a key board.
6) Plenty of effects.....may never use them but nice to have.
7) Will be small and neat but the others do this as well.

On visiting the second shop i was shown this.... Serato (http://www.serato.com/products/scratchlive/)....

I know it's software and you need tuntables, hard drive and a laptop.....but does anyone use one of these set up's.....pound for pound it comes in the same price or near as spit as the Denon or should i stick to my first suggestion.....

You have to bear in mind Serato and the like were solutions produced to try to integrate vinyl with digital technology, and have been around for a few years now. Now that HD players have been introduced (we've only seen the first wave as yet, there will be more to follow in 2008), setups like Serato will be rendered inefficient.

I use Traktor Scratch and Traktor DJ Studio, with Denon 3500 cd players or Technics SL1210s depending on how the mood takes me.
If i really want to go basic I can just take the laptop.

Yep same setup as virtual dj / virtual vinyl... If you don't want to use the turn tables or cd decks to control the software you dont have to. But bit pointless buying the likes of serato / virtual vinyl or traktor scratch if you only intend to use the laptop park of it!

I had a chance to play with a dennon the other day, owning the other 2 main stream units thought I would give it a go. It is nice but no better in my opinion than the Numark D2. Now numark have added key lock I think it has closed a lot of the gaps between the 2 units. I think it is a shame that dennon only decided to go for a 40gb drive as I already have 80gb filled on my numark. I know you can upgrade it but to be honest im not sure its worth the effort. The biggest plus for the dennon though is that it uses an intergrated Power supply rather than the external brick type unit the other use. Downside it they didnt think things through when placing the cable outputs. Rather tight when fitting to a sealed rackmount case. Especially if you have wooden supports in it.
Im getting rid of my cortex in the next month or so and replacing it with another D2 not because the cortex had been a problem, far from it been a wonderful unit did exactly what it said on the box. But because it is much easier to work with 2 identical units and it will make drive updating much easier if I only use one type.
P.S any one wanna try a cortex mine will be going soon.

There is one slight advantage of going the traktor scratch or Traktor DJ studio route and that is if you are using cd decks to control them you have a full backup system as well always at hand.

With a cortex or similar I would still suggest having a pair of cd decks as backup

As others have already mentioned, the likes of Traktor, Final Scratch, Serato, Virtual Vinyl & Virtual DJ all have the ability to use time coded vinyl or CD's for hands on manipulation, thus trying to convert turntablists to the digital side.
They are all very good, but as James mentioned its a different kind of product to the DNHD 2500.

Mobile wise, the Denon is probably a little lighter to carry around, just add your mixer and a back up cd player. Something like Serato, to get the best from it, you'd also want either turntables or tabletop CD players or a controller a laptop/pc and a mixer, plus then a back up pc/laptop or of course the cd players or turntables could be used.

Its cheaper replacing an external power supply perhaps with a new brick:D

Another question - with the Denon if you buy the BU-4500 disc draws and the main unit goes down, does the CD player still work???

Not sure how you'd get to anything beyond the first track on a CD, but if you were using a Denon or compatable mixer with fader start then yes you can still play CDs without the head unit.

So with the Denon head unit plus Denon CD draws and mixer........you should be able to play CDs.
DN HD250 / BU4500 / DNX500..........= CD's still working after head unit goes down......

Or should you still go with another back up??

As I haven't got a compatable mixer for fader start, I've just got a DN4000 in a seperate flightcase that rarely gets put onto the rig these days let alone used.

It should work, but as I said I'm unsure as to how you'd be able to select any track other than the first one on any CD without the head unit.
