Big 'un Tonight

Phew... Just finished loading the van for tonight's extravaganza.

There's not many venues round these parts that will hold more than about 100 folks but tonights it one of them... more like 300. Unfortunately there's only about 80 guests so I have to set up part-way down the hall to "hide" some of the empty space. And because it's a huge hall the client has paid for the big rig.

So, going out tonight for a post-wedding bash for a handful of folks we have...

4m freestanding gantry with:
Mirrorball, Set of 4 Dynamo's, 2 Acme Stormbirds and 2 TFT monitors

3m goalpost deckstand with:
Pair of Dynarolls, Double red laser, Two single green lasers, Starcloth, Pair of moving heads, 2 loopytubes, Laserball

Two video projectors with 8' freestanding rear-projection screens

Four speaker cabs Peavey Pro 15
Two Prosub-15P's

And all the associated audio gubbins, computers and ancillaries.

Will obviously try to get some pics if there's any time between setting up and starting :o

OMG it was a nightmare :eek:

Arrived at 5pm as agreed for a 7pm start.
Problem #1 - due to size of room (HUGE) and number of guests (not many) management had decided that disco needs to be setup halfway along the hall and tables had already been placed & laid so I was stuck with it. Problem was that the ceiling height wouldn't support both the gantry and the goalpost, so I had to load up the gantry with as much kit as poss and drop some effects. Ended up 'losing' Stormbirds and a couple of lasers, and it also meant moving heads on the floor (not a problem as there was loads of space).

Problem #2 - management had underestimated the space required for two 8' freestanding rear projection video screens. Again, too late to rearrange the room so ended up projecting onto a couple of blank walls - not ideal but better than nothing. (As it turned out later this was a good move because people could dance along to 'shadowdancers' and we turned it into a bit of a competition once the lads started getting more drunk).

Buffet was booked for 8. At 8 there were about 10 guests in the room. We'd been playing background since 6:45 and was told to carry on.

By 8:30 the place was filling up and people were tucking in.

First dance at 9:00.

By 9:30 we were down to about 30 guests - a split mix of older and younger generations (just a couple of kids). In a room that can seat 300 :eek:

Luckily they stayed all night and a good time was had by all.

Unluckily the B+G had insisted on 90's & 00's POP music only - no techno/clubby music - aaargh! - and no action dances - double aargh! Managed to persuade them to do half an hour for the older folks - a few 60s/70s classics had them bopping around for a while. Also threw in a handful of action dances as requests - and lo and behold who were up first to dance to them? Yep - B&G. Nightmare.

Rounded off dead on midnight to a ripple of applause (lost in the room as they were a good 70 or 80 feet away from me). Place was empty by 12:10.

No pics... but yet to transfer the video over so there might be a few 'in action' shots yet.

Overall it was a good night despite the challenges of the room and the musical constraints.
