Different night.

OK…..Saturdays wedding….What a nightmare…

Early set up…walk away and come back….only goal post and lights left there before anyone asks…everything working, lovely.

Went back at night finish setting up and start to play back ground music - 60’s, Motown, 70’s allsorts. 07:30 start till 11:30 finish. I usually start with 2 lights (Storm Bird and a Gobo) then add Acme Scanners later on. Check if there working - one of them down (I only use 3 now as one has died and still not replaced it)….I’m frantically going round cutting cable ties trying to chase back to source whilst playing, checking bulbs and fuses…..I managed to suss the fault was in the unit…….oh well back to the doc’s with that one…….

Carry on playing for about 45 min’s and no-one about….the B&G are in another room, so they have not moved out yet…..the band’s manager / sound tech came over and asked me if I could move my lights over in there direction when they start, don’t have a problem with that so I agreed, but did find it odd.

B&G come out of the room…..went over to congratulate them and meet the best man to ask what’s the score with the first dance (we had rough time scales but everything was a bit out of sync by now)…..well he was steamed….I think this is going to be fun.

Groom comes over and asks me to announce the buffet….which I do and he also mentions could he have the first dance after the next record…..no problem…..went to see the band…..were not having that, there just starting to eat…off they go, I return back to my part thinking this is fun. The guy from the band comes back and say’s give them ½ hour then go into the first song - I’ll give you the nod…….fine by me…..still looking around for the best man………in corner wondering what day it is!!

First song over….band start up….Indie Tribute…..not bad, they are then starting at 09:30 and finished 10:30, leaving me 1hr to go…….start my second bit with Reef - Place Your Hands…….keep the tempo……..someone comes up can you put some Motown on…..I’ve already played some……oh please…..so on it goes……..the dance floor is deserted after that…..nice one…..try building it back up whilst using the B&G playlist and requests. Not working.
Some one came over and leant on my goalpost and ripped my star cloth off the front…no damage as it’s velco fixed…..but not the point.
Old mother hubbard asked me to turn it down as the baby was trying to sleep……right next to a speaker……
Then to top it all a woman comes up and shouts at me ‘Your :Censored: ’
‘Why’s that then?’
‘You’ve not played my request’
‘Well there are other requests coming in and you are actually next’
‘Better be’….then walks off. On goes her request and with only ½ hour to play I decide to play what I think will move the crowd……half hour no-stop solid floor even played over as no-one had said anything……the woman is on the dance floor the whole time, after I finished she decided to come over and still have ago……at this point I switched off and attend to my gear and packing up….totally ignoring her…..she got the message and left me alone.

So although I’ve been on a high over the last few weeks, just thought I would also post my different nights……….:)

Sorry to hear about your night on Saturday, but luckily those kind of gigs are few & far between.

I'd still rather have been in your shoes than mine...I've spent the last 48 hours ripping 5,000 tracks from CD to my hard drive & re-typing all the artist & title errors, of which there were hundreds!

...BORING!

It's the old "Drink" thing again. Some people after a drink want to start something others just want to go home peacefully to sleep it off. I think women are just as bad as men as well, when it comes to not handling there drink.

At least you did the job professionally even though you didn't have a good night yourself. You may find out that everyone had a great night.

I'm wondering how many punters will notice the difference between tracks ripped at 256 kb and those done at 320?...or even how many DJs!

Also, a lot of my CDs are compilations from the 60's 70's & 80's which were originally recorded by the artists onto analogue tape anyway!

Maybe I should start a thread about ripping speeds!

Not many probably, but as hard disc space is so cheap, you might as well do them at the highest possible bit rate.

Experts say we should not be able to tell the difference in compression with anything over 192 (apparently CD quality). I beg to differ so i have started ripping at 256. Seems like some of you agree!

If you communicate with the bride and groom before the wedding alot of this can be avoided.If i know that im sharing with a band i will also try and talk to them so that we all know whos doing what and that way the night runs smoothly.Nothing worse than turning up on the night and then sorting out your playlist.

Well, I must be low rent, then, as I rip EAC VBR based on 192 but, being VBR, it usually works out at a little over 200. Will probably look at gradually re-ripping to 320 once I have a terabyte of space or more. That said, Rob's point about 50s and 60s music means that all you're getting for the extra bits of fidelity is higher quality tape-hiss ;)

Not typing ALL of them, surely? :eek: Your ripper should be able to fill in most of them from CDDB or similar - I very rarely find CDs where I have to type in the track details these days...

All the details for every CD filled in automatically, but I had to re-type literally hundreds of them in order to correct a load of mistakes.

The main problems were artist's name in title field or vice versa, artist AND title in one of the fields, a number of artists coming up as "various artists" when they weren't and also a number of spelling mistakes (mostly where it was just a couple of letters reversed) in either the artist or title.

I would guess that out of 5,000 songs, somewhere between 5% & 10% had an error of some kind in either the artist or title field. I didn't bother checking the other fields, as they are less important.

Anyway, it's pretty much all done now.

Get plastic tips like Tony Iomi.

Should've used Audiograbber, much easier to edit tags in there than with iTunes.
